Koarappa (koh-AH-rah-pah)

Koarappa are a species of intelligent aquatic humanoids living in the oceans around the Wyrm Straits. Much like humans, they run the gamut in alignment, from good to evil, and the various tribes have differing relationships with the fisherfolk and others who live along the shores.   The koarappa live in caves and coral reefs deep beneath the surface, and their skin is composed of fine silvery scales. Their eyes are large and located on either side of their heads for maximum light-gathering and to allow them to see in almost all directions at once. Their bodies are not designed for walking upright and they can do so only with difficulty, the large flippers on their rear legs in particular making walking a slow and cumbersome procedure. Their forelegs have three bulky claws and a minimally opposable 'thumb' to allow them to grasp.   A few koarappa have learned to speak Common with some difficulty, and their words are hard to make out thanks to the gurgling and hissing sounds which accompany their speech. As they do not possess lungs like typical humanoids, only gills, they do not pause for breath but flex their gill slits with every word, forcing the air past the structures which make the sounds.   Some of the tribes practice a lively trade with their land-dwelling neighbours, bartering fish, crustaceans, handicrafts, and cargo recovered from sunken ships in exchange for various foodstuffs and items like utensils which cannot be manufactured underwater. Other tribes are more likely to sink the ships passing overhead and take what they want from the wreckage. Word spreads of the more aggressive tribes naturally, so many friendly Koarappa are figuratively tarred with the same brush as their unfriendly cousins.   As a result of their alien appearance and poor reputation, the koarappa are commonly considered monstrous and dangerous, to be killed on sight. This has made mending the relationship between the two species particularly difficult.
