Star Jade / Starfall Ore

A few times every millennium the Alhazarde Comet passes close enough to the world of the Sundered Lands for chunks of Star Jade to fall to the world below. It is a mineral that resembles angular crystals made of green jade, but with a metallic sheen, and is eagerly sought by some arcane spellcasters who have discovered the secret of using it to extend life and gain additional arcane energies.   The green light of Alhazarde is a portent of great and terrible events, and shimmering green auroras spread across the night sky whenever it passes close enough to drop star jade. When it does, burning streaks of emerald green flash across the sky as the chunks of ore slam down onto the surface below.   The sites where starfall ore have landed are sometimes changed in strange and unnatural ways, or magical plagues may assail the surrounding lands, but Star Jade Adepts search it out no matter what. These spellcasters have discovered that preparing the star jade in certain ways, then ingesting it lengthy rituals, allows them greatly extended lifespans, potentially even immortality, and great arcane power.   Adepts who have started the transformation process have vividly green eyes which seem to glitter as if polished metal when the light strikes them. Advancing upon the path turns both pupil and iris into a metallic green colour, before transforming the eyes entirely to make them appear as if a sculpture made of green metal. The individual retains excellent vision, however, with any vision defects they had being corrected by the change to allow them eyesight as acute as a hawk's. The change spreads throughout their body, tinting their skin greenish then turning it into a metallic green sheen as it thickens and strengthens. Eventually, their body seems to transform to resemble a living statue made of flexible green metal, although they remain a living being.   An adept's magic is also affected, as all magic they cast changes its visible hue to a shade of green; fireballs are an explosion of green flame, lights are greenish-white, fog clouds and ice storms appear to be tinted greenish in colour, and so on.   Due to the rarity of star jade, adepts who have discovered the process keep it a closely guarded secret, hunting down the merest rumours of the existence of star jade to retain it for their own use as they progress through the transformations.
