List of Great Kings of the Kanodite Empire

The Great Kings of the Kanodite Empire ruled over the Kanodite Empire, a vast territory that at its height governed nearly a third of the known world. At its height, the Great Kings ruled an empire that bordered nine oceans, encompassed two of the three largest deserts and the wealthiest trade routes of the time.   It was the largest economic and military power in the world before Sunfall for a period of over three hundred years. The Kanodite Dynasty began with Shapoor in 322BSF and ended with Kazem in 6ASF.

When the Kanodite Empire first came to prominence, under Shapoor I, they were led by a king. The title of Great King was created by the 'Triplet' the original alliance of three kingdoms; the Kanodites, the Golbarans and the Mohashahrans. The title was shared and each king would be 'promoted' to Great King every three years to ensure a balance between allies. During Shapoor's reign, the Triplets system ended and the title became hereditary. Whilst the title is no longer shared, both Golbar and Mohashahr received preferential treatment in the Empire. The title of Great King was used daily whilst Emperor was only typically used in foreign correspondences and religious and cultural festivals.   Further titles were given to each Great King during their reign for particular acts that they had undertaken. For example, Shapoor was granted the title of Crafter of Peace for uniting the warring city-states that surrounded him and Ashkan was given the title Shatterer of Danhudin for his conquest of the city. The titles were granted solely by the Shaliks.

The Great Kings

The head of the Kanodite Empire was the Emperor, more simply known as the Great King. Seen as the most divine figure in the known world, as a descendant of the gods, each conversation with him ended with the phrase 'may your world never end'. Kanodite Coinage placed the current Great King on the front with a horseman or spearman on the reverse indicating that he alone could bring wealth and security to his subjects, a theme started by Shapoor, the first Kanodite Great King.
I offer this to your eternal health and reign. May your world never end.
— A typical homage before the Great King
When seen in public, the Great Kings were guarded by their royal guard if outside the capital or palatial guard if not. The guards were tasked with keeping the masses away from the monarch and clearing the way ahead. In the presence of the Great King, those not in the royal family were expected to kneel and offer homage. This homage was typically a libation of water to the Great King's health.

Main Article: Kanodite Empire   The Kanodite Empire was an absolute monarchy, ruled from the top by the Great King. Beneath him were the Shaliks, who ruled over their shalikdoms on their behalf. Despite being the main point of authority in the Empire, the Great Kings were still expected to hear the complaints of their Shaliks and adhere to the advice given to them by the Solite priests.   The Kanodite Empire reached its greatest extent under Amavand IV in 131BSF and its longest-serving Great King was Amavand III who ruled for 41 years. Bairam II sat on the Kanodite throne for the shortest amount of time, ruling for only two months.
