Altine Ennis

Altine Ennis is a Keldish alchemist, apothecarist, and proprietor of The Burning Bramble apothecary in the city of Keld. Originating from the small forest town of Centercrest in the Keldish periphery, Ennis has recieved some renown in Keld and afar for the high quality of her products, despite the small size of her operations. She does, however, remain a mysterious and not entirely respected figure in the city, owing to her reclusiveness and eccentricity.
Altine Ennis was born as the third of five siblings in Centercrest, a small forest town located in the traditional sphere of the city of Keld. Her father, Cullen Ennis, was the town's bailiff, while her mother Andrie was a professional hunter. Growing up, Altine was often left alone to wander the surrounding shady forests, and soon developed a keen interest in the area's plant life. With her father using his influence to secure her an apprenticeship with the town's apothecarist, Altine had the opportunity to utilise her knowledge of local flora in a productive and potentially lucrative way. A bright pupil with a passion for the craft, she proved to be a natural in the field and quickly mastered the basic arts of apothecarial alchemy. However, Altine quickly grew bored of the 'rudiment' of day-to-day apothecary, and began covertly conducting alchemical experiments of her own devising, with occasionally explosive. Growing increasingly frustrated with the limited materials and resources available in her small country town, Ennis ultimately moved to the large city of Keld, where she was able to establish her own small apothecary, The Burning Bramble. Her innovative cures to uncommon ailments - though not always without side effects - has over the years earned her a good reputation, and she makes enough money to cover the cost of her business and her experiments.
A reclusive and occasionally almost misanthropic individual, Ennis spends much of her time in her store's dimly lit basement, where she conducts most of her experiments. The door to The Burning Bramble rings a large bell when opened, and entering customers can expect to hear Altine's trademark loud sigh long before she emerges from the basement to serve them. While often curt and impatient with customers, especially those with 'trivial' issues, Ennis can quickly become enthused when presented with a challenging or unusual ailment, and has the begrudging respect of many others in the alchemical community. Some individuals with peculiar issues may come from foreign cities to The Burning Bramble to seek help from the 'unorthodox apothecarist' there - though those with reputations to maintain should only do so covertly, as Keldish locals will often theorise about the strange afflictions of strangers seen entering Ennis's shop.
Ennis's peculiar habits have earned her a reputation as somewhat of an eccentric within the city of Keld. She often does not leave her shop for days at a time, usually concentrating on some experiment or another, and generally seems to find most conversation irritating. She has been frequently seen rushing out of her shop, buying some random ingredient, such as a capsicum, and rushing back away. Some locals swear Ennis has come up to serve them with smoke emanating from her hair or clothes and her refusing to even acknowledge it. She will also occasionally completely disappear for days or weeks with no notice and no indication besides the door of The Burning Bramble being locked. Consequently, many rumours abound about Altine in the parts of Keld she frequents, for example that she is secretly conducting arcanist rituals, that she has been working on some impossible alchemical project like immortality or turning lead to gold, or stranger ones like that she's trained a monkey to be her assistant. For her part, Ennis largely goes without acknowledging these rumours, though some more empathetic residents of the city theorise that they may have contributed to her general reclusiveness. However, the few that know her well claim that she's never given any indication she doesn't enjoy experimenting with strange ingredients alone in a dark room.
