Living in an underwater environment, the homo superia habitanting the depths of the Morphisean Sea developed an expressive way of communicating. Depending on gesture and body language, the Mosphisean Sign Language has existed for hundreds, if not thousands, of years as a common language between underwater sentients on this particular part of the world.
Some have assumed, incorrectly, that Morphisean is the universal language of underwater, when in fact is closer to a commerce and diplomatic language used between factions and kingdoms. In fact, since some cultures are able to communicate telepathicly or empathicly, the usage of Morphisean is reserved to high class and travellers.
Communication is done often by moving hands, wrists and forearms. Beings with extra appendages, such as antennae, fins or additional arms incorporate it within the language with what is somehow describe as an "accent" among Morphiseans.
Written System
Morphisean has no written form, with no recorded alphabet. As a language used mostly in conversation between distinct factions, the recording using a common language is not justified.
In the instances in which conversation needs to be preserved such as treaties, deals and interfactional agreements, both parties used to write their own versions of the documents in native language. Advances in morphisean technology allowed for recording of conversation and signs for posteriority.
Sign and Body
Body language is tied closely with Morphisean Sign Language, as are facial expressions. Many surface dwellers have a hard time learning the language exactly for that reason. While surface language uses facial expressions for demonstration of emotions and subtext, since MSL is a formal and direct language, it has not the same usage.
One example of common misinterpretations is the sign for Peace or Weaponless, which only distinction to the sign for Captive is if the mouth is open or closed.
