Gnomes

Standing between 2 and 3 feet tall, gnomes are famous for their cleverness and expertise in tinkering and mechanics. Gnomes are often stocky, with bushy beards groomed into braids or points (for the men). Because of their appearance, they are often mistaken for very short dwarves; however, while gnomes may prefer to live underground, they rarely deal in mining as the dwarves do. Female gnomes contain their hair in intricate braids that denote their status in society. The more intricate the braid, the higher a female gnome is in society.

Speaking of gnome society, status is centered around technical skill in creating mechanical objects or magic items. Gnomes are encouraged from a young age to apprentice early, often with fierce competition for teachers. Older gnomes generally consider it a duty and a privilege to teach the younger generations, though there are always eccentric exceptions.
