The Demon War

Trapped on the dying world of Zadura, the people of Zadura believed they had found their salvation when a portal opened. The portal led to a paradise... and a new chance for the people of Zadura. But to their horror, this eden was overrun with demons. The demons enslaved the Zadurans, trapping them in slave camps and prisons to keep them from the glory of this new world.

In secret, the refugees worked tirelessly to find a way to free themselves from the bonds of their captors, to no avail. Then, when almost all hope was lost, several brave Zadurans discovered the source of the demons' power: a magical crystal known as a sunstone. But when they brought these sunstones to their people, the demons discovered them. Furious, the demons massacred the camp in an effort to regain control, to no avail. Bolstered by the power of the Light, the Zadurans fought back, winning victory after victory until the demons were driven back to their most ancient stronghold, the demon city of Jela. Confident in their victory, the forces of Light pursued the Demon Queen to the heart of the stronghold. With her death, they would end the war once and for all, securing a new home for their people. But she had set a trap with her life's blood. Upon her last breath, she released the black fires of the abyss, scorching the demon stronghold from the earth and destroying the remaining forces of Light.
But the leaders of the forces of Light had been forewarned, and had sent their people away from the fortress before pursuing the Demon Queen with only a few elite warriors. While their lives were lost, the majority of the Light had retreated. After the fires had settled, a watch was placed on the crater, watching for the demons to come again.

The main leadership of the Zaduran refugees had been killed, leaving a slight power vacuum.

Aftermath

Due to the explosion, thereafter named the Calamity, ash and smoke were sent high into the atmosphere, lowering the temperature of the world for over two hundred years. This became known as the Long Winter. Also present in the Long Winter were treacherous wild magic storms. Though by the end of the Long Winter, those storms had faded.
