Charcoal
History & Usage
History
Charcoal is probably as old as mankind itself. We used it to light up our caves and cook our food. One could assume that originally we made charcoal by accident but eventually we took note and began making it ourselves. Charcoal could be used as a fuel for fire, as it was easier to keep lit over long periods of time than other fuels and it was a renewable resource. In a more modern day, few people know how to make Charcoal on their own. We simple go to the store and choose the type and brand we want, return home and throw it in the BBQ.
Everyday use
Used as a cleaner burning fuel for kilns, ovens, fires and general heating. If purified, it could be used internally for poisoning. It also makes a good implement to draw with. You can use a small amount of crushed charcoal to make a water filtration system, this does not remove bacteria and viruses, so the water should still be boiled.
Hazards
Charcoal is made by burning wood in low oxygen. As a result, it of course has a fire hazard and smoke inhalation.
Environmental Impact
The creation and use of charcoal releases pollution into the air.
