Raido Birds
Geographic Distribution: Global
Raido Birds were originally bred by Gnomes in the Yulan Hills. Their defining characteristic is an incredibly strong sense of smell. Additionally, they are able to reliably travel great distances and have a strong sense of home, returning when finished with their task. When provided a scent sample from a specific person, they are able to carry messages with incredible accuracy.
The birds are about a foot tall and have a wingspan of about 3 ft. There are several different varieties, but most have a speckled brown plumage. The call of a Raido is a piercing shriek that can be heard about a mile away.
I myself have been known to employ the skills of a Raido Bird from time to time, especially when I need to send correspondence with a colleague on the continent of Arshwe. Large organizations may keep a library of personal scent markers for their flock. The Dawn College has one such collection. Our roost is adjacent to several large rooms that have tiny cubby holes behind labeled doors. Inside each cubby is a different person's scent.
If you are corresponding with a person for the first time, it is often considered polite to send along the same sample of your own so they can reply. I often do this with a small scarf that I have worn for several days. I know some colleagues who prefer to send socks or a clipping of their hair.
Raidorgon
Several Scholars from Jeorta have attempted to adapt genetic abilities of the Raido Bird into a type of native lizard. The hope was to breed a creature with similar capabilities that will be better suited to pass messages through the caves and tunnels that permeates their homeland.
Documentation on their progress has been limited, and it is an unknown at the time of publishing whether or not they have achieved success. Queries for more information have gone unanswered.
