Travel Times

Basic Rules

Travel speed depends on a large number of factors, but it can be worth having a basic starting point when calculating.

Walking

A person walking at a standard pace will go about 3 miles per hour. For a full 8 hour day of travel, a person can expect to go about 24 miles.

Riding Horse

Using Dungeons and Dragons 5e rules, a riding horse can travel about 6 miles per hour. A full day (8 hours) of travel will carry the rider about 48 miles.

Carriage

Carriages can be more comfortable to travel in, but they are confined to roads, which are typically less direct paths, and risk broken wheels which can completely derail progress. In ideal conditions, a pair of draft horses can travel up to 32 miles in a day. Conditions are rarely ideal, and 12-15 miles a day is much more typical.
