Assistance Lyraiks

As a species with an extreme variety of physical abilities and aspects between individuals, societarians have a difficult time defining disability among their peers, and usually resort to just making sure that people of all kinds will be able to use and enjoy the activities and appliances built around them (A custom that has given waterland silky engineers more than one headache when planning underwater structures).
However, there have always been people that, due to an array of reasons, need more than cleverly crafted objects and norms to be able to do their activities with a similar pace and easiness than the majority.   Besides the wonders that prosthetics, glasses and adaptive medicine have provided to make people's opportunities more equal, the use of lyraiks, societarian's most popular pet, as helpers for the disabled has made a huge improvement on the lives of many people.

Heavy specialization

Newborn Lyraik by Naelin
An assistance lyraik training starts as soon as they hatch and will follow them their whole life.
They are assigned to their future handler very early on and learn the general aspects of being calm and attentive and the specifics on how to help with their handler's condition, be it mental or physical ones.   These lyraiks wear a special harness, particularly in public, to declare their status and also to help their handler be in direct contact to them. They usually also wear tags and distinctions to make sure that they can be retrieved to their handler if they get separated.

Common types of assistance lyraik

Assistance lyraiks can help with a multitude of conditions and situations and can be trained to be specialized on them. Some examples of specializations are:
  • Assisting blind or deaf people
  • Assisting those with mobility impairments
  • Accompanying those with health conditions that require quick responses to critical situations
  • Accompanying those with mental conditions
  • Accompanying those that went through heavily traumatic situations
  • Assisting in places like courthouses to help crime victims
  • Lyraik, neuter aspect by Naelin

Assistance lyraiks are usually allowed in places and activities where pets are not permitted, and their training makes them look like relaxed, gentle creatures most of the time. As such, they look very attractive to kids and adults that usually try to pet or call them, distracting them from their job.   Assistance lyraiks usually wear very big, distinctive warnings on their harnesses indicating to not distract them, but their handlers still have to make big efforts reminding the strangers that their lyraiks are not pets.
