Case Study on "The plague"

The plague of the western farms of Belmyre, implications of mundane diseases maintained by magical means, a case study by Dr. G. Lime   This treatise details a case study of the highly contageous plague outbreak in the farms of western Belmyre...   The symptoms include itching, rashes, coughing fits, nausea and auditory halucinations. Severe cases that go untreated may cause occular necrosis. Current observations give reasons to suspect at least a 95% fatality rate, but likely higher...   The disease causes mucus secretions, and seem to also affect creatures not only across species, but also to spread onto non-living organic material such as wooden buildings and furniture...   While the disease and the affected give off no magical auras, the disease seemed connected to a totemic representation of some extraplanar entity. The destruction of this totem reverted all the somatic and visual symptoms of the collected samples to their original state.   Contagion from high amounts of exposure to the contents of the boils however seemed to not be dispelled by the totems destruction. There is reason therefore to suspect that the disease itself might be non-magical, while some magic was used to project the disease by artificial and supernatural means. Interestingly, since the disease seemingly vanished from the surrounding area, the magic might A) not have actually transmitted the disease, only it's effects, somehow with no magic aura B) the shattering of the totem has a healing effect, and actually cured a real disease   Since the first theory presupposes a nondetectable magic, it's going to be hard to falsify without better equipment.   The second theory might have a more substantial impact on medicine and magic alike. The totem could possibly be spreading or empowering diseases and death by draining restorative and curative energy, meaning the technology might allow for transference of lifeforce from one creature to another. Additionally however, since the disease seems to be able to affect non-living matter as well, it might be possible to draw on curative energy from things like buildings, items and plants as well...
