Magics

Magic is at its core the manipulation of the leylines of the world. It's how these lines are manipulated and in what ways that determines the effect. The source and method of the magic is what is truly defines unique types. Magic power level fits into ten levels. Each is a fixed energy to create the desired effect. Most spells can be upcast with more energy, but most require a minimum amount before it is successful.

Methods of Magic

Domain Magics

Domain magics are the result of tapping into the harmonics of the leylines. It is simpler but often needs guidance to access. There are two main forms: 8 Main High & Outward Frequencies of Leylines (Of which is also known as Divine Magic)
 
  • 1 - Light
  • 2 - Knowledge
  • 3 - Death
  • 4 - Nature
  • 5 - War
  • 6 - Life
  • 7 - Trickery
  • 8 - Tempest
    Other divine domains are inbetween or combinations of the main eight. Time is not really Divine, but is considered a domain when permitted by gods. The first four are Domains of Order and the last are the Domains of Disorder. Order and Disorder should not be confused with Lawful (Principled) vs Chaos (Unprincipled) of the Outer Planes. Each domain has a natural counterpart, but it should be noted that this is more balance than opposition.

Arcane Magics

Very similar to Domain Magics, but utilises calculations and manipulations to create the magic. If the higher planes are letters and the lower planes are numbers, Arcane magic is the algebric math that brings them all together. Schools of magic are simply different types of formulas grouped together.
  • Ki "Magic" is just the manipulation of one's internal energy to the world around it compared to simply interacting with ones surroundings.
 

Psionics

Psionics are magics separated from the Leylines, completely disconnected. They are eddies of leyline energy swiriling inside the user. Users manipulate their powers to connect to and change the world around them. This differs to Ki as users and practicers of Ki don't disconnect themselves from the leylines. Pscionics come in many different forms and are like a psudo-mix of Domain and Arcane magic.

Sources of Magic

Ones manipulation of the leylines depends entirely on their ability to do so. There are three typical methods that arise.  

Gifted Abilities

Gifted magical abilities come in many forms, but this is typically a deity, quasi-deity, or powerful being granting power to a lesser being. Granting them the energy and knowledge to connect to the leylines. This is the source of power for clerics, warlocks, and some paladins and druids. Losing their faith in their deity or revoking their deal can cause the individual to lose their abilities and power. It is one of the easier ways to get powers, but also one of the easiest ways to lose power.  

Learned Abilities

Learned abilities come from ones devoted study and dedication. These are typically arcane or psionic in nature, but cases have occured where a domain is mastered without divine intervention. This is especially true for druids mastering the primal magics. This is often paired with other sources as a way to better oneself. This is the main source of power for the vast majority of wizards, blood hunters, monks, druids, and rangers. Mystics occasionally fall in this category as well. These abilities are often safe from loss.  

Inate Abilities

Inate abilities are when someone is born with a hightened connection (or disconnection for psionics) to the leylines. This is often the cause of a powerful ancestor, someone like a fiend, dragon, or archmage. This may also be due to an ancient curse or magical influence on their ancestor's very existance. Inate abilities are most often arcane or psionic magics. They are able to enforce their will the world without fancy calculations. The formulas naturally come to them to achieve their spellcasting. These abilities are often safe from loss.
