Linguist

You have studied languages and codes, gaining the following benefits:

Benefit

  • You gain proficiency in the Linguistics skill; if you are already proficient in this skill, you instead gain Expertise in the skill.
  • You learn three languages of your choice, and gain advantage on any saving throw made to resist an effect caused by any form of curse, madness, magical effect, possession, or similar effect—magical or not—that might occur from reading a book, inscription, scroll, or any other form of writing.
  • You can ably create written ciphers. Others can't decipher a code you create unless you teach them, they succeed on an Intelligence check (DC equal to your Intelligence score + your proficiency bonus), or they use magic to decipher it.
  • You can attempt a Linguistics check in place of an Arcana check to activate a scroll or rune, or in place of an Arcana check to identify a scroll or rune. If you are attempting to cast a spell of a level higher than you normally could cast you can roll an Arcana or Linguistics check instead of a straight Intelligence check. Additionally you can cast a spell from a scroll or rune of a level equal to your Proficiency bonus without possessing the Spellcasting feature, instead of the standard 2nd level cap.
  • You have advantage on Intelligence checks to try and decode ciphers. If you can not immediately decode a cipher you can spend a day's work to gain a basic understanding of what is written, allowing you to re-roll your attempt to decode it.
