Sahuagin

Sahuagin are well known and feared among aquatic races. These piscine predators are cruel and vicious, and they see all other creatures as either competitors or prey. The sole exception is the shark—sahuagin are rarely found without semidomesticated sharks nearby, as they feel a close bond with these other predators of the sea and both creatures are used to hunting ruthlessly alongside each other.   Although sahuagin usually gather together in tight-knit tribes, an individual sahuagin might decide to pursue glory on her own, perhaps seeking a powerful artifact or a richer hunting ground.   Sahuagin appear as some sort of cross between humanoids and fish, while their frame has much in common with humans—they are larger with most sahuagin being at least seven foot tall—having two arms and two legs they also boast a tail that ends in a fish-like fin to help propel them through the water. A sahuagin's head is clearly piscine, with a mouth that gapes like a fish but it is filled with sharp, flesh-rending teeth.

Amphibious (2) (Ex)

You can breathe air and water.

Bite (1) (Ex)

Your fanged maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Blood Frenzy (2) (Ex)

The sahuagin has advantage on melee Attack rolls against any creature that has equal to or less than half of their maximum Hit Points, or if they are suffering from a bleed effect.

Claws (1) (Ex)

Your claws are natural weapons that possess the Light property, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you can deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Cold Blooded (x) (Ex)

Sahuagin are cold-blooded, they cannot be detected by thermal vision; however, they are especially susceptible to the environment around them, they suffer Disadvantage on any Environmental cold or heat effects, and are Vulnerable to damage caused by Environmental cold or heat effects. Resistance to either Cold or Fire, cancels out the Environmental vulnerability of that environment. Natural resistance to one of these environments negates that environment's penalties.

Deepsight (x) (Ex)

Sahuagin are specially adapted to the lightless depths of the oceans, but not to air-filled environments. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. This only applies while you are underwater.

Dweller of the Depths (2) (Ex)

Adapted to even the most extreme ocean depths, you have resistance to cold damage; additionally, you are immune to Environmental pressure effects caused by a deep, underwater environment.

Natural Swimmer (x) (Ex)

A sahuagin gains a swim speed of 40 feet.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sahuagin are usually green skinned; darker on the back and lighter on the belly. Many have dark stripes, bands, or spots, but these tend to fade with age. An adult male sahuagin stands roughly 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Sahuagin are highly fish-like, with webbed feet and hands, gills, and a finned tail. There's additional webbing down the back, at the elbows and, notably, also where human ears would be.   About one in every 216 hatchlings possess four functional arms. These four-armed mutations were usually black, fading to gray in color. While sahuagin usually killed off defective hatchlings, they allow these to live, often marking them as natural born leaders.

Ecology and Habitats

The sahuagin can be found living in the temperate seas, although their tribes range all over the ocean, from frigid to warm. They build vast cities in the depths of the ocean that rival the air breathers' great metropolises, while near the shoreline they create impregnable fortresses from which to launch raid after raid against land dwellers. It is not just those above the waves whom the sahuagin hate, they are in constant conflict with other aquatic creatures such as the merfolk, tritons and even the mighty aboleths. Their warlike tendencies have made the sahuagin one of Syrik's most hated races. The only creatures the sahuagin seem to get along with are sharks, with which they can communicate telepathically, and the Quinien people, whom they share a language with, although over the years several dialects have arisen, pushing these two races apart. The sahuagin have even developed their own species of servitor sharks called feeders in the depths, which are more intelligent and more bloodthirsty than regular sharks.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Sahuagin were the natural enemies of Locathah and Tritons. Tritons and sahuagin could not co-exist peacefully, and wars between them were often prolonged, bloody affairs that occasionally even interfered with shipping and maritime trade. Sahuagin tolerated the Locathah much more than they did the Tritons. Sahuagin had an only slightly less vehement hatred for merfolk.   Multiple births are frequent among sahuagin, and are dealt very harshly with offspring who are not robust or aggressive enough, eliminating them through compulsory fighting to the death between young sahuagin. Sahuagin seem fixated on all aspects of consumption, and are eager to weed out anything they see as weak or unworthy to compete for resources.

Civilization and Culture

Common Myths and Legends

Sahuagin worship Sekolah, god of sharks, as their patron deity and the father of their race. They also perceive him as the ultimate adjudicator and incarnation of punishment, officiating over an endless struggle between mythic figures. These figures were the hunter: "He Who Eats", and the hated: "It That Is Eaten", with the struggle between them reflected in every aspect of life. Because of this, sharks were seen as holy creatures to them, and dolphins were hated for their friendship with tritons. The sahuagin made regular, living sacrifices to Sekolah by feeding the sacrificed being to the sharks that followed every sahuagin priest
