Kerellon/Derenell Civil War
With the Enthar Empire successfully rebuffed, the Almusian continent scrambled to recollect themselves in the resulting chaos of the war. The Unition formed, under the strong hand of King Merelon, over the mountain range, Aabria solidified their borders and locked themselves away, and on the eastern coast, King Keldis signed a peace treaty with King Merelon of The Unition and found himself ruling over the rest of the continent.
Things were, if not quite peaceful, but comparatively quiet for the next century or so. No matter how much The Unition might try to expand their borders, Aabria was carefully hidden behind the mountains, and King Keldis' successor Queen Dakella was setting up a marriage for her son to solidify their relationship with The Unition.
Queen Dakella's son married the fifth daughter of The Unition's King, and peace was once again secured. Together, they had two sons, Kerellon and Derenell, before the Queen was unable to produce any more heirs and her relationship with the King soured.
Kerellon and Derenell, the young heirs, grew up in a household with very little love. A political marriage, a strained relationship, it was just the two brothers against the world. But one of them would have to be King. Derenell, the eldest twin, was primed for the position, and Kerellon was always his supporter, always had his back.
Things soured when Derenell married a daughter of Aabria. A woman Kerellon wanted. The woman Kerellon loved. She died giving birth to their heir, and the relationship between the two brothers grew more and more strained.
Later, when their father was on his deathbed, they had a falling out, and Kerellon attempted to take the crown for himself.
So began the civil war. The country split in two, Derenell claiming the northern part of the country from the original seat of the King, and Kerellon formed his own ruling over from the south. Since then, the two countries have been at war, bickering over their borders, pushing back against the other, but after the initial conflict that decided the split, neither has gained much ground.
In the beginning of the war, the total casualties numbered close to ten thousand, far too many of them being civilians caught in the crossfire when the brother began to split the country in two, their towns and cities just happened to be in the wrong place.
Derenell has since turned to God. To atone for his sins and the loss of the people he was supposed to protect.
Kerellon is bitter and crippled from an injury he sustained in the final weeks of the initial conflict. He has conscripted the vast majority of his fighting-age individuals, particularly mages, to protect the border he so jealously guards.
