Kro Ved'ma

Since the Aeshir have been placed on Syshir, they have been able to channel the power of the aether around them. Those mages who have a strong ability to do so, have always encountered problems when drawing too much from the world around them. Plants, animals, other people, can die if a powerful enough mage doesn't limit their ability to channel.   When society civilised, and the Gods lay down laws concerning the killing of other Aeshir, it became taboo to use what became known as "blood magic". Killing something when drawing from the aether, was not a sign of a mage's power, but instead a sign of their lack of control. It was a mark of inexperience, more than anything else.   There weren't always those who agreed with this, however. The Kro Ved'ma, a group of mages living in the pre-Empire northern Enthar, decided that they didn't believe in this little cultural faux pas. They would do whatever they had to do, to complete the magical experiments they required. They were academics, first and foremost, at the front of magical investigation of the era, and until the Empire solidified its place, trained some of the best mages of the day.   After the Enthar Empire came fully into power, and they began to root out any mages who they couldn't control, the mage school the Kro Ved'ma began, came under governmental influence. The Kro Ved'ma was dissolved, and the mage school was allowed to continue, only if they followed a carefully approved teaching plan. This plan did not involve so-called "blood magic".   While technically Kro Ved'ma no longer exists, the school remains standing, the original building exactly the same as when the Blood Cult first built it, even some of the teachers were allowed to remain to educate the next generation of mages - as long as they do so how The Empire wishes it.
