Respite

Although most everyone above the age of adulthood across the continent of Almusia would likely know of Respite, it is rarely ever spoken about in polite conversation. The infamous town of whores, gambling, and drink, Respite is a hub of debauchery, grown out of a time of war and struggle across the continent.   Straddling the border of The Unition, Kerellon, and Derenell, Respite sees sorts from all over. While not on a main road, anyone travelling between nations by foot or cart can easily find their way there. Respite is not trying to hide who, or what, they are. They've been taken down before, and they'll just build back up again. While The Unition has taken an "If I can't see you, you can't see me" approach to the town, Derenell and their pious ways have razed the little town to the ground at least twice before. But Kerellon, seeing this as an encroaching of their border, quickly countered. Not because Kerellon wished to aide their "citizens", they don't claim Respite as their own either, not until it suits them.   But that suits Respite just fine. It allows them to act above and below the law. No God, King, or Council is recognised as all-mighty on Respite soil. Flesh and gold are the only things that hold weight here.

Government

Respite answers to no government, and no law, living on the border of three countries who can't see eye-to-eye has its benefits. Those who are strong enough to take and hold power do so, and rules are mostly held in place by an unhealthy balance of fear, and money.

Guilds and Factions

Over the years, three main businesses have emerged above the others:
  • Mother's Milk, the bar where you can find any alcoholic beverage brewed across the six continents. If their name happens to be confused with the brothel down the street... well... they won't say aloud that it was intentional. They too have their share of entertainment, but they're careful not to encroach on Madame Zhende's turf, for now.
  • Silk, Madame Zhene's house of ill-repute. Silk is the workplace of the majority of Respite residents. Their catchphrase "Anything you want, bound in silk," alludes to the well-touted belief that Madame Zhene has a whore for everyone. Other brothels have attempted to make their start in Respite, and the vast majority have mysteriously burned to the ground.
  • The Full House, the gambling den of Respite, owned by Tzar, the scarred, ex-Entharan. He and Madame Zhene have a love-hate relationship, and he just barely tolerates the owner of Mother's Milk.
