The King’s Service
Composition
Manpower
The current number of guards in the King’s Service is numbered 87. Prior to the rule of King Alsaran, there were only 20 members allowed into the King’s Service. Since King Alsaran’s connection to The Bright Lord’s church, and the war between The Unition’s neighbouring countries Derenell and Kerellon, he has increased that number to 100.
Weaponry
The King’s Service are typically equipped with polearms, most typically glaives, halberds and pikes depending on the preference of the individual. Every Service member also wields a shield, with the King’s crest emblazoned in gold on silver, and keep a crossbow at their hip.
When the King’s Service was more specialised, with only 20 members, there was more variation among the ranks. Service guards could wield longsword, longbows and even rapiers should they show enough skill with the weapon. The only requirement being that they be able to protect the King against whatever foes he may come up against.
Structure
The King's Service in the current day is organised as such:
- The Kingsman - This knight of the realm answers directly and only to the King. He is typically a veteran of many years, well-decorated, and known across The Unition for his achievements. This individual is the leader of The King's Service, and therefore must be able to not only fight well, but also must strategise, organise, and lead a large team of warriors.
- Captain of Service - Leading squadrons of between 15-25 men, these guards are in charge of the day-to-day running of the Service. They ensure their men arrive on time, facilitate the equipment they require, and resolve any major disputes amongst the men. They answer to The Kingsman, and the King, and carry out the orders given to them using their squadrons.
- Servicemen - The vast majority of The King's Service fall under this category. While the lowest in rank, they nonetheless must be individuals of the highest calibre when it comes to fighting. In recent years, many Servicemen have been promoted to the position from the ranks of The Bright Lord's warriors. Even the Servicemen are not simply guards, they are experienced, highly trained fighters that must pledge their life to the protection of King Alsaran.
