Charm Ethics

The magic school of Enchantment comes with a variety of Charm spells that are distasteful to modern understanding of consent. There are only certain Charm items or spells that are actually banned but in general anything that alters decision making of lucidity and choice are frowned upon in a lot of ways. There are unfortunately two very different types of people who employ these spells: people who want the most non-violent self-defense possible and people who want to get up to no good.   Psionics are a poorly understood non-weave based, magic-like effect that can sometimes be used to cause things like Charm effects. While mostly unknown these would carry the same cultural weight to anyone just learning.

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses violation of consent in multiple contexts.

Illegal w/o License -

Provincial licenses can be obtained to allow for their use, or for sale of their ilk to Licensed individuals.   Dominate Monster - While this can be used against humanoids it can also be used against dangerous creatures. Those in certain fields where they frequently come in contact with powerful monsters or are otherwise relied upon to protect people from animals in a manner where it is difficult to get to them quickly or risks great harm to the user otherwise can gain this license. The license covers for use of spell scrolls, wands, and self-casted spells on the job, and is very firm on not being used against humanoids or other sentient beings.   Command - Because of the restricted nature of this spell it is considered more controllable and thus useful. Individuals who work in law enforcement, security, body guard and other defense fields sometimes seek the further training required to obtain a wand of command and license to use it. Spell scrolls and self-casted spells can also be used under this license but are uncommon.

Illegal Outright -

Using or selling these is outright violation of continental law.   Philter of Love - AKA the Love Potion or Love Philters - This item causes the creature that consumes it to fall in love with the next person they see that they might have had any chance of being attracted to before. Love is a powerful emotion and can motivate one to many things. This is especially notoriously used to garner sexual consent, which is rape and is punished as such under the law. Love Philters require a particular plant that isn't used in other potion brewing and even being caught carrying this plant can come with a very heavy fine.   Dominate Person - This can only affect the autonomy of humanoids. There is no license for it despite being a less powerful spell than Dominate Monster. Like Suggestion and Mass Suggestion there are uses where it is swept under the rug as self-defense but it is typically punished by heavy fine. Luckily the spell duration is not terribly long.   Feeblemind - This spell lowers the intelligence of the targeted creature and is exceptionally difficult and expensive to fix. While only very powerful casters can manage this spell it is still feared by common society. It leaves sentient creatures in a state of confusion and fear, which can lead to abuse, accidents, self harm and even death. Creatures under the effect of Feeblemind do not know how to vent the fear they have nor how to care for themselves. Sentient beings under the effect of Feeblemind also cannot seek necessary medical care (such as medications) and self-care, nor can they communicate consent. This spell has a long list of individuals becoming lost and dying of exposure or starvation.   Modify Memory - A person's memories don't just make who they are, they can also vastly alter their quality of life. This spell can be also be used to make the victim forget a crime or other violation unto their person. This is a violation of self on the deepest level and is basically a bass boosted shortcut of gaslighting.   Suggestion and Mass Suggestion - The sheer potential of these spells to violate the autonomy of a being cannot be understated. Use of them in self-defense is often overlooked, and a blind eye is often turned when it is used by someone to defuse a tense situation. The full weight of the law comes down upon those who do anything beyond this.   Geas - Much like Suggestion and Mass Suggestion this spell has massive potential to violate autonomy. It does not auto-pilot the victim and instead forces them to do as told on threat of harm or, more often, death. Because it can also result in assault or murder (to the victim or perpetrated by the victim at demand of the caster) this spell doesn't have the benefit of a blind eye being turned.

Effect

Charm person spells typically bewitch at least one individual but can also involve multiple. Those that encourage friendship and nothing more are considered violating but not necessarily ill in intent. Spells that compel one toward certain actions or beliefs, alter memory, or change intelligence are considered gross violations of consent and are in many cases illegal to perform. Some without license, and others outright. Certain spells of this nature only persist in dark places, among the elderly of longer lived races, or locked vaults of knowledge such as the Cobalt College.

Applied Restriction
  • Because of printed supplements and restricted content viewing this is unlikely to be a comprehensive list. If you are unsure about the legality of any spell please talk to your Dungeon Master! They have final say.
  • These spells being illegal on the continent of Menos does not make them illegal in play. There may be roleplaying consequences but you can still take them as spells learned on your level up, prepare them, use items that cast them, etc.
  • If you are wanting to use these illegal spells "legally" make sure you understand why the spell is illegal in this world to begin with. You might be able to get away with certain uses. Such situations are even mentioned on a few spells!
