Morgan Marigold

(a.k.a. Marigold)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

He's super dead and super skeletal. I'd say it's a miracle he's even moving around but we all know that it's actually dark necromancy magics and devoured souls. His skeletal nature seems to bother him to some extent, considering his tendency to wrap in enough silk to appear to have an amount of body beneath it other than bare ribs.

Facial Features

Which came first, the flower or the name? Morgan has a marigold rooted in his right eye socket that is constantly in bloom. Streaks of pollen often decorate his face visibly in the blacklight of The Morgue, suggesting it still produces plenty. Beneath the flower in regular lighting the area frequently swept by pollen has a hint of discoloration from mold that would like to capitalize on the nutrients there and the ambient moisture from the flower. He has to remove it often but it leaves behind a green stain. A scrap of flesh spans across the left side of his face that desiccated and mummified rather than rotting completely off.

Special abilities

  • The Marigold: He can "blink" this eye by rapidly closing the bloom then allowing it to unfurl again suggesting fine and rapid control. Marigold has shown some control over the pollen it produces and it seems to have some sort of magical abilities, including something that lets Marigold get in to people's heads if they're being stubborn about information, but this isn't something he has ever elaborated on. What all he is capable of using this flower for is unknown.

Marigold is rarely without his namesake but it is possible, as seen here while Marigold models a taxidermy dire raven cloak. Only those closest to him have likely even seen both his sockets empty in hundreds of years. The age of the flower and the magic that powers it is unknown. Image by SaintNevermore.

  • Lich of Liches: Marigold is a lich powerful and ancient enough that he no longer has to consume souls- he somehow managed to hit an intake amount that left him eternally fueled. This suggests a nearly god-like level of power and makes him as one of the most powerful beings ever to exist on Taerekel. And here he is dinking around in a night club and adopting dead cats.
  • Stitches: A form of magic most likely created by Marigold himself, something that takes running blood and turns it in to thread tied to whatever needle was used to cause the wound. What these do is something he plays close enough to the chest that not even his highest ranking Carnies know, but everyone from top to bottom seems to know not to mess with it.

Apparel & Accessories

He has a collection of crowns, basically all of which are oversized, that he likes to wear. There are probably stories behind how he got them. He wears all manners of extravagant clothing otherwise, be it fancily wrapping up in entire bolts of expensive silk or ornate embroideries, costly dresses and robes, capes of fine fabric or feathers, epaulets, partial masks, gaudy jewelry, and a variety of period clothing that one might expect to have seen on nobles in centuries past. Anything that screams wealth, especially potentially tasteless wealth. He will also casually wear powerful artifacts when meeting with certain types of people, especially if he knows they want that or something similar in particular. It's a power move to show the sort of knowledge he keeps on people, proof he took it from whatever previous owner it had, and is a dare to try and take it from him that he knows will never be challenged. This inflammatory sort of social intimidation also puts his conversation partners off footing and in a careless state of mind.

Unless he's in the lab. Then he's just in a thick safety apron, safety goggles to protect eyes he doesn't even have, and literally nothing else. It probably isn't for his safety. It might just be to encourage his kids not to go in to the lab unbidden because who the hell wants to see their skeledad like that?

Personal history

While Marigold does seem to love to talk he hasn't done much talking about himself. It is typically just "I'm great, aren't I? And super hot." Not much of a history. It can be assumed he was some form of necromancer in life who spent a deal of time pursuing his current state of undeath, as is typical for most liches.   What little specific information is known has been shared by his adopted daughter Rascal. She says that he has been around since before or during the Dawn Wars, that lichification was a fairly new concept since the humanoid wizarding arts were still young when he turned, and that he used to be a true and unapologetic villain. He has undergone many name changes in his unlifetime and may be present in historical records as any number of powerful people. For some time now Marigold has actually been making an effort to be a better person, having done things in the past terrible enough that he feels he needs to repent. One could still consider him a villain, especially since he has assassins on his payroll and threatens death so casually, but no one really knows how that compares to his old self.

Contacts & Relations

  • The Carnies: His workers. They come in a variety of ranks but all answer to him, from simple bar tenders and servers, to performing artists, to spies and assassins. He has both the living and dead in his employ and it has been implied that he raised many of his undead flunkies himself, other than the revenants. He seems like a surprisingly well-meaning boss, considering those in his highest ranks can quit at will. Or that's just confidence in the threads speaking.
  • The Party: He seems pretty amused with them and after saving his daughter they've become more than some faces in the usual crowd. He does still hold their threads however, and while he has said he owes them one he has made clear that won't count for much if they piss him off.
  • The Baroness: A beautiful vampire who lives elsewhere in the CC with whom he has had an on-again off-again relationship for hundreds, possibly thousands, of years. She's way out of his league looks wise, so she's probably attracted to power.

Family Ties

  • Rascal: When Marigold lost his last home to the attack on Dryad's Gold he had to run, and with his familiar not returning he somehow ended up adopting a child in the lonely gap period. He gave her moniker of Rascal and raised her like his own. He has a true father-daughter bond with her and is even willing to risk his life for her, much to her surprise.
  • Scarlet Be Thy Coat: While Scarlet is his familiar by function, he is Marigold's son by affection. A black cat with purple eyes and a scar across his throat, he appears in tales and portraits with the lich across the ages. After the burning of Dryad's Gold he did not return for nearly a century. He was successfully resurrected at last and has been trying to adjust to change.
  • Elven Wife and Children: Mentioned briefly by Scarlet to his friends. If there is any truth to the story, Marigold was once married to an elven woman with whom he had two half-elven children. According to his familiar they are all long dead. The cat has lied through his teeth enough times that this may be a total farce.

Religious Views

The Raven Queen can get bent, Asmodeus is a chump, Vecna was a short-sighted little bitch, Mystra ain't got nothin' on him and Null is a killjoy.

Mannerisms

He's surprisingly expressive for a skeleton, with flamboyant movements and some ability to alter the shape of his skull to create moods. He has an air of superiority around him and doesn't hide the fact that he views almost every mortal as a play thing of one sort or another.

Hobbies & Pets

  • The cats: Marigold is an over-the-top level cat person. He has one of those apartments that seems more concerned with their happiness than his own, lavish bedroom and private lab aside. All of his cats are undead and rumored to be hyper-dangerous souls trapped to a squishy, harmless body, but they all seem very much like very friendly and very alive cats. Most have not been introduced with names. Only one's name is known:

Speech

He speaks clear and fluent common without a misplaced accent likely thanks to lots of practice, but his tone is always very adaptive and can range from nearly feminine to horror show dark magic growling.

Wealth & Financial state

Considering the extravagance of The Morgue and how he doesn't even have a cover fee one can assume he is either fabulously wealthy or fabulously broke and incredible at looking rich anyway.
"Hey! Did you know?"
  • Marigold once attempted to become a God! He built a massive cult under the name Vekna, finding it very funny to spell it with a K, and promised that he would provide the final step to his recipe of lichification once he ascended. He would have succeeded, but stopped just short, deciding he was already incredibly powerful and enjoyed having no strings attached to his current capability. This resulted in the deaths of any of his cult who attempted to finish the recipe themselves!
  • As a result of his previous godly aspirations he killed Velsharoon, the previous God of undeath of Taerekel! Is killing an undeath God really enough? According to his church no, but Marigold sure seems to think so!
  • Marigold absolutely hates birds, especially Ravens. He has them as trained animals in the club just so he can have the occasional joy of smashing one in to a magical communication device despite the fact phones exist and he has one. From the way he talks about it there's just something about that crunch!
  • All the Marigolds of the multiverse occasionally attend a Marigold party in a particular Sigil. They stole the idea from a notorious alhoon by the name of Tephralt, who designed his as a trap. You might think an all Marigold party would be a rager, but there aren't that many of him, and they have a tendency to just sit around and gossip over drinks while complimenting themselves by proxy of complimenting the other Marigolds. The only problem used to be the fights over who had the nicest familiar, but now they hold Scarlet Fancier competitions!

A necromancer so ancient and powerful that he claims one day he simply felt full. He has been finding ways to spend his endless time since, and in the modern day owns a nightclub in the Central Capital known as The Morgue. He's friendly enough with the party but made sure they understood damn well that snitches get stitches from liches.
