Calendars & Timekeeping
Taharjin's Flame is home to numerous cultures which all keep track of time according to differently meaningful markers. To ensure consistency across a global scale, I chose to categorize world events first by the number of years between them and the "Present Day". For instance, the continental event The Plague Years is dated between 1212-1112, being the duration from the event start to its termination as compared with our own point in time. Obviously, higher numbers for events are to be read as situated further in the past than lower ones are.
This system offers some initial clarity but gets clunky as "our time" ceases to be an artificially fixed point and begins to inch along narrative lines. With any advance in plot, one could only keep these dates as baselines and add the number of years that have passed since then. As I develop more of the cultures and their belief systems, these base dates will either be replaced by or appear concurrently alongside other, more specific ones that better capture the flavour of their social origins. A full Table of Calendars can also be expected to appear below with equivalent dates to make sense of parallel timeframes.
