In the sacred text The Passages of Time, a beloved excerpt reads:
"All gifts of the Giver are cherished, but the gift of Beauty is supreme; it brightens the mortal's fleeting days, a spark amidst the dimming stars."
This sentiment is brought to life in Metholister, the capital city of Friselzi. Known as the 'Mosaic City', Metholister's sparkling glass tiles form endless, vibrant images across the walls of buildings and shops. In the presence of such captivating beauty, reverence for the artists who bring such visions to life is deeply ingrained in the city's culture, with tiny shrines dotted around to leave alms for these semi-divine creators.
The gift of Beauty in Friselzi, however, is not confined to artistry. The eye – the portal through which beauty is perceived – is equally prized. Consequently, Friselzi has honed its focus on optics, from the political and aesthetic perspectives to the literal study of the eye and its mechanisms. On a literal level, opticians are highly esteemed, forming a privileged class that fuels an industry dedicated to the production of lenses; connotatively, politicians and oratory rank high in the list of national interests. Metholister is not the country's capital, but with an armamentarium of polished politicians it certainly vies for the title.
A particular manifestation of The Giver, known as the Eye, is worshipped here. A colossal shrine, gleaming with the same extraordinary glasswork and mosaic mastery as the rest of Metholister, is a beacon of pilgrimage for the faithful. But this adoration is not without contention; the Eye's veneration treads dangerously close to the formation of a graven idol, causing disquiet amongst the leaders of the Bren-Brihaer faith, who, in addition to being deeply concerned for the souls involved, have pocketbooks that really can't afford to shrink.
In contrast to Metholister, the city of Baclamon harbours a more industrial atmosphere: Here, the glassware industry thrives, closely tied to the rise of lens technology. It has spurred a fascination with microscopy, revealing a world previously hidden from the naked eye, a revelation that seems almost magical in a hemisphere starved of true magic. But this powerful knowledge has caught the attention of the Uvan Empire. Oralt, however, clings to its principles and has resisted selling this technology, wary of the Empire's relentless march towards automation and war.
