A Historical Rebirth: From Shadows to Spotlight

The Berythian Tradition, rooted in the manipulation of the four classic elements of Fire, Earth, Water, and Air, once shunned the limelight, preferring to remain cloistered away from the prying eyes of the uninitiated. However, a dark chapter known as The Plague Years (1212-1112) changed their fate forever (approximately 1000 years ago from the present day). A devastating plague, fueled by malicious sorcery from The Exiled Tradition, gripped the continent of Rela, causing widespread suffering and mistrust toward all mages. The Berythians, unfairly blamed for the catastrophe, faced a public relations crisis that demanded a radical shift in their approach.   To restore faith and assuage the fears of the masses, the Berythians opened their doors, both literally and figuratively: They instituted an open form of martial practice within the grand Arena, inviting the common people to witness their true abilities. The hope was twofold: to earn the trust of the populace crucial for their survival and to demonstrate the awe-inspiring power that served as a deterrent against potential challenges.

Rituals and Formalities

Within the Arena's hallowed grounds, a tapestry of rituals and traditions unfolds, enhancing the spectacle and grandeur of each combat. As mages step into the ring, a pre-battle preparation, known as "The Enkindling," electrifies the air, infusing the arena with raw elemental energy. Opponents greet each other with the ceremonial Salutation, acknowledging the power and skill of their adversary.   A match progresses under the watchful eyes of Elders and a discerning audience. Every spell cast, every wisp of magic, carries weight and purpose. To conclude a duel, combatants engage in the "Final Flourish," a synchronized display of magical prowess that marks the victor's triumph. Violating the sacred rules and regulations carries severe consequences, ranging from temporary suspensions to permanent bans from future competitions.

The Path of Ascension: Levels of Mastery

Central to the Berythian Tradition is the pursuit of magic as a serious study. Mages progress through a series of discrete levels known as "Circles", based loosely upon the ranking system of the Circle of Masters. Advancement from one Circle to another requires a stringent test, often in the form of combat. Within the Arena, formalized duels determine a mage's eligibility to ascend to the next Circle. These battles are highly structured and monitored, providing a crucial benchmark for a mage's growth and development.   The Berythian Arena is not only a proving ground for individual mages but also a platform for collective competition. Divisions and leagues exist to foster talent and camaraderie among mages. Lower Circle tournaments, middle Circle tournaments, and upper Circle tournaments showcase the prowess of mages at different stages of their magical journey. Additionally, team-based duels create a dynamic and thrilling atmosphere, forging alliances and rivalries alike.

A Captivated Audience: Showmanship and Entertainment

As the Arena became more accessible and its spectacle captivating, a unique culture emerged around the professional combatants. These mages, renowned for their exceptional skill and showmanship, choose the path of a full-time fighter rather than risk their lives on perilous missions. They entertain and enthral the masses with their panache and razzle-dazzle, becoming the darlings of Sabellis. A special rank, known as the "Glimmering Star," celebrates their unparalleled achievements within the arena, further elevating their status.

A Vibrant Calendar of Events: From Intensity to Revelry

The Berythian Arena operates on a meticulously crafted calendar, ensuring a balance between intense matches and sparring practice. The on-season witnesses grand tournaments, such as Blossom's Challenge, Midsummer's Crown, and Autumn's Grasp, drawing crowds from far and wide. The climactic Starfall Finale crowns the champions of the year. Off-season, the Arena remains active with closed matches and sparring sessions, allowing mages to refine their skills and prepare for future challenges.

Admission and the Economic Tapestry

To sustain the Arena and its operations, a fee structure is in place. Ticket prices vary depending on the significance of the event, ranging from affordable sums for lower Circle tournaments to more substantial amounts for upper Circle battles and team divisions. Sparring matches during the off-season offer a more accessible option for enthusiasts. Other revenue streams include merchandise sales, concession stands offering delectable treats, and magical trinkets to commemorate the experience.   Gambling is not formally welcomed by the Berythians themselves, but privately, citizens, especially nobles, gain and lose fortunes betting on their favorite prize fighters.   The Arena of Berythian Mages stands as a testament to the enduring power and wonder of magic in Rela. Its rituals, regulations, and divisions create an enchanting tapestry of martial splendor, fostering growth, entertainment, and community among the Berythian mages. In this realm of elemental prowess, the clash of spells and the roar of the crowd intertwine, bringing the magic of Rela to life in a spectacle like no other.
