The Aegis

The Aegis is an expansive, metaphysical detection grid that spans the northern hemisphere of the world, serving as the frontline defense against potential incursions from The Exiled Tradition, especially the radical faction known as The Hex. It is the joint creation of The Council of Landezon, which represents the Berythian, Nurhetic, and Aurimbic magical traditions. The Aegis represents the single greatest collaborative achievement of these traditions and symbolizes their shared goal of maintaining peace and harmony.   Constructed using a fusion of the elemental, psychic, and temporal magic from the three traditions, the Aegis forms a vast network of interconnected magical energies. Its purpose is to monitor and alert the Council to any attempt by the Exiled or Hex mages to cross the Autumn Yield, a low-Magic Zone separating the magic-rich north from the depleted south.   Each tradition contributes uniquely to the creation and maintenance of the Aegis. Berythian mages, as elementalists, imbue it with the raw power of the elements. Nurhetics, masters of mind and dream, weave a psychic tapestry that enhances the Aegis' sensitivity, allowing it to respond to even subtle shifts in magical energies. The Aurimbics, skilled in Fate, Prophecy, and Time, shape the Aegis' chronal structure, maintaining its resilience across time and fortifying its resistance to chaotic magical fluctuations.   Key to the Aegis' operation are Listeners, individuals with latent magical gifts who fail to gain admission into a Tradition. After being subconsciously attuned to the Aegis, Listeners extend its range and sensitivity, their inherent magical sense serving as living sensors for the grid.   The Aegis is anchored and maintained at strategic locations known as Strongholds, fortresses under the Council's control. Within these Strongholds, specially trained mages, known as Custodians, dedicate their lives to the upkeep and operation of the Aegis, utilizing specialized techniques unique to this task.   Despite its strengths, the Aegis isn't infallible. Its coverage can be uneven due to geographical constraints and political complications. Additionally, due to its complex and intertwined nature, the Aegis could be vulnerable to disruptions if any of its constituent parts are compromised. Nevertheless, the Council remains vigilant, constantly monitoring the Aegis and striving to rectify its weaknesses based on its collective commitment to safeguarding the northern hemisphere from mortal and existential threats.
