The Eye of the Law
General Summary
Taharjin, as she introduced herself, continued, "...As the first to meet me, you have fulfilled the the prophecy, and will be the ones to aid me, as we usher in the new age of the dragon."
I found myself lacking any substantial questions... Just repeating what she said, I asked, "The age of the dragon?"
"Correct."
How enlightening.
"Yes, but... What is this age?" I asked for clarification.
"Wherein we will bring back those that were taken from us."
"Who was taken from you?" Octaviu asked.
"Xistu," She said.
How even more enlightening.
"When you say taken..." Davina said, "Killed, kidnapped...?"
"Absorbed
"Absorbed?
"For fuel,"
"Were you the one- The mind at the door?"
"I am the structure, and I am structure.
"What needs to be done to bring Xistu back?"
The obelisks must be alightened.
Obelisks?"
During my reign, energized obelisks were built to move my power throughout the planet. Due to the folly of your race, most of them have been lost... Only a fraction of the ones that existed in my time remain. Your chances are infinitesimally small. You lack technology. Those that come will destroy you with a thought, and in no time.
So these obelisks... They channel magic?
Correct. Energy. Magic is perspective.
And the magic comes from you
Incorrect. My vessel.
...This vessel?
"Incorrect. My vessel is covered in ice.
The poles... That would explain things.
"If you're the structure and everything in it... Does that mean that small... Creature, we saw earlier... Is that you too?"
"Incorrect. The creature is a scavenger. A stowaway."
"Oh, so we might get a pet out of this endeavor after all," I said.
"Your vessel is in the north pole."
"Correct."
"How many obelisks are there?
Unknown
Is there a way to find them
Affirmative. I may grant you the ability.
Is there any more questions before we begin the task at hand?
I have many questions, but none really pertaining to the task at hand, I'd imagine.
Is that a consensus?
I am... I have no real ability to do magic, but you would have my blade.
"Well, what are these prophecy conditions you speak of?
What cannot be negotiated, fixed points in time.
Even more enlightening. Why do I try?
"Rianemi, if I'm understanding this correctly, lighting those obelisks would mean giving everyone in this world magic... Are you okay with that?"
"Everyone may have magic, but not everyone will be as good," I smiled. Still, how very astute. I had not considered such. Still, I don't think that would be a bad thing. To be burdened with none is a sad thing indeed, I would think. There is also the point of these outside forces 'Taharjin' mentioned...
"Also, Taharjin, what is this panel made of?"
"Enthredic. It has many forms. It is in the veins of some of you."
"Is that why you took his blood?"
"No."
"If I may ask one thing, why did you need his blood."
"You can tell species by blood."
"Correct. Our species were the author-emperors of the universe."
"If that's the case, why did you only take blood from him?
All else were judged to be similar.
"You are weakened... Or were."
"Correct. I am what remains."
"What are those little statues?
They are memorials to the Xistu. My companions.
"So Xistu is not a person, but a race?"
"Correct, the children outside of time. My children. Their blood flows through your veins.
All of us, or just her?
All, but Rianemi most of all. Their blood carries the power.
Blood... They did use blood oaths, in the past. I suppose that was the thinking of the past. Didn't work, as far as I know. I wonder if it I were to give all my blood to another, would benefit as well?
"Before I agree to anything, I would like to know... What is this threat?"
"An image has been provided. You may explain to your friends
"It's bad," Dinu said, "I think... I think we should go along."
I agreed. No matter what, I can only see this benefiting us.
"How do we ignite them?
Your brains must compute the solution. I will provide assistance in this regard.
And then we were lifted in the air. Light filled us, and I was completely overwhelmed. So much magic, so much space, so much pain. Searing pain.
I have bestowed upon you the eye of the law. Its benefits are many, but your primative nervous sytstems will take time to adjust. The prime function among which is communication with me at any time.
I saw the others, and they seemed to be fairing as well. Blackened spots showed on each of their heads where the light hit them, and found myself feeling my own head. It hurt. It seemed the light was being pulled in.
"Will this fill in?" Davina asked. I saw Davina's hands subtly tracing runes in the air. I was unaware she knew runes.
"It cannot be removed."
Wonderful. I'm sure the scholars will love to poke and prod it. I'd never be able to leave again. I brushed my bangs over it. It would have to do for now. Davina ripped off a small piece of fabric to cover it, and tied it over the spot. Octaviu pulled his hood lower.
"You will be called upon to assist in the final moments of my restoration. This structure will once again be entombed in stone. Follow the flame."
A whirlwind filled the room, and the floor glowed brightly, engulfing us in a brilliant orange. It fell out beneath us, and there was only blackness.
We woke up on the beach outside Suka. The orb did not return with us. A shame.
Was it all a dream? The burning spot on my head told me otherwise...
