The Quorum
Top Secret Clearance required
The Quorum is an enigmatic order within Taharjin’s Flame, formed of masterful mages whose pursuit lies beyond the bounds of any singular Tradition. While the magical Council enforces strict laws to prevent cross-Tradition exchanges, the Quorum dares to unravel the potential of combined magic, believing such exploration could reveal a more complete understanding of mystical forces and perhaps even return them to a state of power known only during the mythic days of Devokan. Membership in the Quorum is invitation-only, extended to those demonstrating exceptional prowess and an open mind willing to breach long-held assumptions. Once inducted, members face the challenge of overcoming ingrained biases, redefining loyalties, and adapting to a cooperative approach forbidden by their original Tradition.
The Quorum’s structure is meticulously organized to support this ambitious goal. Headed by the Grand Magister, who orchestrates the Quorum’s objectives, the organization consists of several branches:
Magical Theory, tasked with exploring the underlying principles of magic;
Magical Integration, dedicated to developing techniques for safely blending Traditions;
Diplomacy and Recruitment, which liaises covertly with individual Traditions to identify potential recruits;
Security and Defense, which ensures the secrecy and safety of the Quorum’s activities; and
Artifact and Knowledge Preservation, responsible for acquiring and safeguarding rare magical artifacts and knowledge, much of which is housed in hidden facilities throughout the high northern reaches of the world.
Each branch is led by a Magister, who supervises Scholars and Acolytes, the latter being new recruits undergoing rigorous training in the complexities of combined magic.
Life within the Quorum is transformative yet disorienting, especially for those accustomed to the Council’s rigid separation policies. Members must reconcile their lifelong dedication to their Tradition’s Object of Focus with the need to think beyond its constraints. While each Tradition’s perspective is preserved to a degree, Quorum members seek to create a shared language of magic that goes beyond isolated views. This shift often brings a profound reevaluation of long-held beliefs and practices, as well as an awareness of the deep ethical dilemmas posed by combining magical forces. Furthermore, the organization’s secrecy places a burden of isolation on its members, who must continue their public lives while concealing their involvement in this secretive order. The Quorum navigates its goals amidst the Council’s cautionary policies, which prohibit non-master-level mages from fraternizing across Traditions for fear of Thought Contagion and ideological dilution. The Council’s approach often fosters isolation, suspicion, and a competitive loyalty to Tradition purity. However, the Quorum embraces the risk of such contact, convinced that only by understanding and ultimately blending their Traditions can they achieve a fuller mastery of magic. For now, the Quorum remains hidden, its existence unknown to most and its work safeguarded by the Council’s own fear-driven policies. But the Quorum’s growing knowledge and its daring approach to the nature of magic could one day change the very fabric of magical society.
