Fusahin, Last Marshal-Regent of Andaen (/fu.'sa:.hin/)

Fusahin al-Jafahin

Riwal-Lia Fusahin (born Fusahin al-Jafahin) was the last Marshal-Regent of the Warlord State of Andaen before the city-state's political transition into its current Council-led government.   Fusahin inherited the title of Marshal-Regent just shy of the age of nineteen, when his father Jafahin ship violently ran aground during an unexplained accident at sea. (This was the fate of a number of Marshal-Regents of Andaen, it seems. Fusahin is not believed to have been involved, a marked difference from a number of previous historical cases.) Although ascending to Andaen's leadership at such an age and under such circumstances was hardly considered unusual, yet this episode of his life had a profound effect on him. Within the first ten years of his reign, he reorganized the hierarchical structure of Andaen's navy, strengthened its discipline through an innovative accountability system, and implemented a barges-and-signals system to streamline communication between ships. These reforms ultimately set the precedent for the means through which Council-era Andaen would virtually abolish piracy across the Haifatneh Sea.   Fusahin is best known, however, as the Marshal-Regent who oversaw Andaen's defense during the historic Second Assault on Andaen, though the casualties and heavy economic losses Andaen experienced from that conflict, combined with Fusahin's heavy spending on mercenaries' dues to bolster the city's defense, led to a serious economic downturn and crisis of confidence in Fusahin's leadership.   Fusahin abdicated on 8 Altawat, 3690 HE, just months after the Second Assault on Andaen. A few days later, he left the city, embarking for Iqinu Isle ("The Azure Isle") for his self-imposed exile. (Historians generally agree that his exile cannot be considered fully self-imposed, given that the First Council of Andaen, established days after his abdication, was not on friendly relations with him.) Fusahin would spend the last two years of his life living on Iqinu. The cause of his death remains uncertain; his health steadily declined throughout his exile in spite of his relatively slow, calm lifestyle there. He had an acute health crisis on the second anniversary of his abdiction, likely due to grief or regret; in spite of being attended to by competent physicians, his health deteriorated rapidly from there, and he died on 10 Athamir, 3692 HE.
