Razortooth Giant

Brief History of the Dragon Wars and the survivors

In the far distant past, when the Elder Mages first began carving out their empires, they advanced rapidly, making good use of their superior understanding of magic. When they encountered the dragons however, they ran into an issue. Dragons, being innately magical, could not only match them in their area of expertise, but also could not be overcome by the force their armies could muster. It seemed that for the first time, the Magocracy had met their match. What the dragons however had underestimated was the lengths the humans would go to just to win this fight.

Arcanogenetics

Sources differ on which basis the Elder Mages used to create the giants. Most commonly, people assume it must have been dwarves, both for the accidental irony and because of the stocky, wide build giants have. In truth however, their build results from an increased need for stability and durability of bones and limbs as the body increases in height and mass. Scholars refute the dwarf theory for another reason though: Unlike dwarves, giants have good genetic compatibility with humans, with hybrid offspring sometimes being able to reproduce themselves.   It is therefore the most believed theory, that the first giants were in fact human volunteers, who were altered either by selective breeding with magical influence or by transformative spells until they became the towering monsters that they needed to be for their tasks. The Giants were wrath incarnate and specifically bred to fight dragons. Their strength was superior to the dragons and also enabled them to use giant bows that were capable of striking the firebreathers out of the sky. Curiously, the Mages forewent giving the Giants any resistance to fire or heat, instead focusing on increasing their bodies regenerative properties as well as resistance to spells.   This last modification would prove to be a mistake.

Fire and Disaster

At first the advent of the Giants proved very effective at furthering the Elder Mages goals. The Giants had an almost instinctual hatred for the dragons and could effectively be released in the vicinity of dragon lairs and then left to their own devices. Eventually however, the hatred of the Giants expanded from their destined foe to their keepers as well.   In the Giant Revolt of the Spellbound Valley, for the first (but not the last) time the Giants rebelled against their masters and some could break their chains and escape into the wild. The increase in aggressiveness bred into the Giants turned them into unpredictable terrors and taking care of them became more dangerous than the dragons they were supposed to fight.   And because of their innate resistance to magic, the Giants were almost impossible to reclaim once they had escaped their bonds. After a while, when the last Dragon on Noria had been slain, the Mages now faced a new problem, because the Giants were still there, including the wild ones outside their direct control.

After the Mages

In cruel irony, the Mages were however spared dealing with this particular problem. The Mages had overstepped their place and for the first and last time in history, Tai'San intervened in an event the Orcs only call "Tai'Sans Wrath". When it was done, the Mages were no more. Their Kingdoms were razed and the survivors scattered across the lands. The orc god had even taken their memories so that they could never reclaim the splendor they had once commanded (read more about this event under Leanders report #3 - Of Tebla the Boar).   The Giants however, were not unchecked and it quickly became apparent that their lifeform, while incredibly effective as part of the Mages warmachine, was not sustainable in the slightest. The immense aggressiveness paired with their giant need space and nutrient to sustain their bodies meant that they simply could not coexist with other apex predators. And while the newborn humans were less of a threat to their existence, the other sapient species were still around and ready to deal with the problem.   As a result, the Giants underwent a dramatic change.

Current Status

Because of the incredibly disadvantageous combination of size and aggressiveness, the Giants needed to change fast, which exerted an external pressure like so: More aggressive giants were more likely to quickly get into conflicts with other species, which eventually ended with the death of the giant. Less aggressive giants had better chances and as a result they passed on their genes more easily.   After tens of milennia this trend had transformed the species. Giants now no longer held any of their original aggression, instead becoming gentle monsters, that preferred to avoid confrontation. As a result, the Giants were pushed into the mountain ranges of the Razortooth Mountains. There they live to this day, leading simple lives of farmers and gatherers. They avoid smaller folk that don't enter their ranges and have a general, unspoken understanding with the Orcs about who should use which territories.   And so another monster joins the ensemble of dangers on Noria, but fortunately, this one is very unlikely to harm you intentionally, even if you end up trespassing in their far away domain.

Great piece of lore and I like the way you have woven a little slice of evolution into the explanation for the giant's current day docility.
