Captain Salavar's Compass

It's mine! All mine! The door! The treasure! It belongs to me!
— The supposed last words of Captain Gervasio Salavar

Gervasio Salavar was one of many infamous pirate lords who controlled part of Far Harbor but his story came to an end 93 years ago when his ship, the Dark Dream, caught a blaze and sunk beneath the waters west of Stepping Stone Island.

It is believed that the many riches and artifacts in the cargo holds of the Dark Dream sunk to the ocean floor along with Captain Salavar; however there is one particular item that turns up in sailors' tales from time to time. The Captain's Compass.

While there is no concrete information to verify the many wild rumors surrounding the legendary tool; the most common story focuses on something called The Eternity Door and the search for its seven keys. As the tale goes, the captain found the doorway that leads to whatever ancient treasure was locked away by the ancestors of the Scaly Folk long, long ago. Unfortunately for the Captain, he found that door sealed by seven locks. He brought with him a powerful witch and forced her to find a way to locate the keys the door required. She was able to turn his compass into a dowsing rod of sorts that would always point in the direction of one of the keys as well as lead the bearer back to the Eternity Door. Salavar is said to have then killed the witch so none would ever be able to duplicate the effort.

Supposedly, Salavar was searching out the keys when some kind of disaster struck. The Dark Dream is rumored to have gone up in flames, taking most of the crew with it including Gervasio. While many more logical minded folk rely on Salavar's history of cruelty toward his crew, drunkeness, and the tenacity of his many enemies as the cause for his ultimate demise, many stories of a more fantastical sort always persist. Some say the Captain went mad, either caused by a curse laid upon him from the witch he slew or by the power of the keys he sought. Others believe a sea creature rose from the depths to end his quest. The most outlandish of the tales even claim the gods intervened to prevent mortals from reaching such potent secrets as that which lay behind the Eternity Door.

Today, there are countless claims of Salavar's Compass being real and having survived the disaster that claimed his ship and his life. Many have sought it out, believing they're destined to be the heir to this mythic treasure. And, so far, all have been duped by forgeries or lost their lives on the off-chance what they sought was genuine. Whatever the truth regarding the compass, only one thing is known for certain- the mystery surrounding this device will continue to claim the lives of those reckless enough to seek it out.

Manufacturing process

The Captain's compass was said to have been enchanted by a witch and once completed she was killed. Some stories even say the compass fell into a pool of the dying witch's blood or that she lived long enough lay a terrible curse upon the item.
