Gargoyle
Magical creatures of stone created to watch over children and newborns left at the church. When one was received, the gargoyles would care for the child and bring attention to the priest or caretaker to ensure they were looked after.
A gargoyle is created using a heart and a stone carving. The heart is an orb of crystal with a magical essence placed within. The stone carving is usually given a grotesque, even devilish look with horns or wings. In the event that a gargoyle has been destroyed, the heart is usually intact and able to be placed within a new statue to create a new gargoyle.
A gargoyle is bound to the church where they were created, they are unable to leave the grounds of the church due to a compulsion that makes them remain within the grounds. Should one of them overcome this compulsion and step beyond the borders of the church, they would be exiled from any holy grounds. Trying to force their way onto the grounds immediately causes them to erode away into sand.
In the years after their exile, the gargoyle slowly loses its mind. Forgetting its purpose and seeking something it can never find making it violent and dangerous until it is little more that a rabid beast. Following some instinctual desire to guard something they will often find a place to perch upon and attempt to ward away everyone from the location.
The hearts of Gargoyles are created from the ashes of mothers who died during child birth or from the ashes of those that have died protecting children.
