Cephalopodism

When the Earth passed through the tail of Haley's Comet in 2061 many people worldwide underwent a mutational change and thus became known as changelings. Most persons did suffer with discrimination, received violence out of fear from others or simply did themselves in due to an overwhelming sense of self loathing.
However, a small group of those who changeling into a human cephalopod hybrid decided to overcome their apparent new disadvantage and work with it to the best of their ability. Thus the near tribal community of the Squidlings came to be.
The Squidlings live on an aging container ship given to them by a charitable group of philanthropists. Sailing the world oceans they have taken it upon their selves to explore sunken and wreaked ships and potential salvage what they can. Often they have an auction online to sell what they have found.

The extent of the changeling mutation varies between individuals. Many have the mutation centered on their cranial structures and upper body. Others are the opposite with their lower extremities changed. Often the Squidlings can also breathe underwater and survive greater depths without diving protection than one would otherwise expect.

The Squidlings have been known to possess other mutations as well both seen as positive and negative. Time will tell how they develop and what if any conditions their children might have.
