New Houston's Founding Day
In 2030 it was determined that the city of Houston on the coast of Texas in the United States was going to be below sea level within the next five to ten years. Climate change was causing a tremendous strain on the city's infrastructure; including the storm drains and levees. The decision was made with a large push from the federal government to no longer rebuild and instead to allow nature to take its course. The money would instead by used to build a new city and to help with relocation for both individuals and businesses. Construction began on New Houston in 2035. With a large boost from the new magical industries construction made rapid progress and the new city hall was opened July 31, 2035. One year later the city celebrated it's first Founding Day.
This holiday is marked by a variety of parades. There is the standard street level parade, and also a sky parade as the flying members of the community do aerial displays. After the sun has set, the magical fireworks begin. it's an extravaganza of color and visual dynamism.
Another facet of New Houston's Founding Day is the invitation to design new buildings. Unlike previously constructed cities, New Houston was largely built using magic and as such the buildings often seem to defy the laws of physics. Schools encourage children to make designs, and anyone can submit a design to the city for judging. Each year on building is selected and constructed. In this way the city of New Houston continues to grow and evolve with the community.
There is also a raffle each year to raise money for charity. The city raffles off the exterior of the city owned buildings. The winner is allowed to determine the color/pattern, etc. for the month of August. You are not allowed to advertise but otherwise most anything goes. There have been pictures of loved ones, space, nature, children's drawings, and murals of all sorts. The community loves it.
