The Phoenix Aerie is located near a remote mountainous desert. This is necessary because of the burning grounds. When a phoenix dies, they turn to ash as the myths stated. These ashes are collected by their brothers and sisters and brought to the burning grounds to be mixed with the ashes of other expired phoenixes. After a period of time a phoenix is reborn.
This rebirth is still not understood. Each phoenix has lived an untold number of lives and even they do not know what sparks the rebirth. It might take one month, one year, or centuries [as it did during the time without magic].
When a phoenix reincarnates they return physically as an infant but mentally they retain all the knowledge and memories of previous lives. This can make for quite the challenge! It is also the main reason that phoenix go to such extremes to gather the ashes of their kin and return them to this remote location.
Watch is kept over the burning grounds. When an infant appears, the current watcher, a volunteer position that each phoenix will take on during their current life, removes them from the grounds and introduces them to the nearby town. The town is designed to assist these wise infants as they grow to a physical age when they can fend for themselves in the outside world. This is a safe space for phoenix to learn to talk, walk, and control their new physical selves. It also gives them an opportunity to catch up on the world and its events since their last incarnation, and train for any education or career that they might find amusing in this lifetime.
