Marrharuj
Marrharuj is the most mixed-race city of Kalandorei and mostly sits atop the Howling cliffs overlooking the immensity of the Phreqin Sea. Once a great trade city it has slowly turned more into a place of higher learning with a plethora of educational institutions calling it home.
A rats nest of tunnels and vertical shafts tie the bustling city above to the subterranean trade hub built around the docks at the base of the cliffs. The poorer part of the city eeks out an existence in the cave homes constructed in the large sea caves below.
History
Rebuilt by the dwarves in the mid 6th century on the site of the older dwarven city of Dag Boram the vast metropolis of Marrharuj rose primarily as a hub for oceanic trade between Kalandar and Eldorei before the great quakes. After the destruction of Kalandar the city sat somewhat dormant with the end of sea-bound trade from the west. It was 715ac when under the cover of darkness the city was assaulted by the Shadowreavers. Much of the city was put to the torch and many hundreds died. Anything not of stone was turned to ash. The Keepers Consulate was robbed and a selection of undisclosed items were taken before the Reavers disappeared back into the sea. Another attempted assault by the Reavers a couple of years later resulted in them capturing and holding the city under siege for almost a full year before the combined powers of Kalandorei managed to recapture the city but not before massive amounts of artifacts and items of magic were mystically ferried away.Modern Day
Marrharuj thrives now with magical defenses in place thanks to the elves. There has been no Reaver activity in well over a century but the Council of Nine will take no risk of history repeating itself again. The population of the city is very varied. A census carried out in 1066 shows that the cities racial breakdown is:- Humans 21%
- Elves 17%
- Dwarves 14%
- Tabaxi 22%
- Halflings 18%
- Other 8%
Trade
Due to a large number of students and academics that live within the city, scribing of documents for the governments of the realm are done within the walls of Marrharuj. This single aspect of trade fills the pockets of many that live here. The western port of the city also fills the coffers with gold from farming of aquatic rarities. Pearl farms stretch along the coast north to the town of Three Ships Bay while heading south fish farms supply caviar to the hospitality industry and scales and fish leather to jewelers and craftsman.Things to do:
