The Fate of Carmathan
General Summary
Ches 1374 (Year of Lightning Storms)
Carmathan Gets a New Duke
When Carmathan was given six months to choose their new successor as Duke, Giles Rosby was placed as Regent of Carmathan to oversee the election of a new Duke. House Macceln and House Valier both vied for the title. House Valier had always been in control of the Carmathan Guard and head of the Duchy's military forces, while House Macceln enjoyed the privilege of being the House of the County of Ravensburg (the capital). The first few months were brutal for House Valier, as House Macceln painted them "the Usurper's Pawns" and continued to tie them to the despised King Gareth Dragonsbane. The former (false) Duke had used his propaganda network to make sure that the people of Carmathan viewed Dragonsbane as a usurper of power, a megalomaniac, and an unhinged adventurer, drunk on power. The disinformation campaign continued by the Maccelns was very effective, and for much of the campaign, it seemed that they would gain control of the Duchy. However, things don't always go according to plan. In the final months of the campaign, the Regent's personal guard, led by his knight, Ser Buckthorn BeyWinn, and Ser Aelhearn, raised to command the Ducal Guard, uncovered proof that the Macceln's had known that Theodorus was a fake all along, and had used that information as blackmail to enhance their position in the Duchy. The Macceln's influence and prestige was shattered, and while the people of Carmathan were completely opposed to House Valier, now they also opposed House Macceln. House Isilvar was initially seen as the "next logical choice" considering its ties to the founding of the Duchy, and its support of Feldrin Bloodfeathers, the founding King of Ravensburg and Damara. Yet the Regent Giles Rosby had held up admirably in the sixth months of contention, and was seen as a fair and balanced ruler. When the final election was held, five of the six provinces of Carmathan chose House Rosby and Giles Rosby as the next Duke of Carmathan (much to Giles' horror).
