What's Happening in Carmthan?
General Summary
Eleint 25th (Year of Rogue Dragons)
Riordan Parnell and King Dragonsbane meet in private ahead of the council meeting. "So any news on Theodorus?" Riordan answered, "No, he must have known ahead of time, before the monks even started spreading the word, he grabbed whatever treasure he could carry and high-tailed it out of there. No responses to the wanted posters either, he's probably not in Damara anymore, and I'd guess not even Impiltur. "The situation in Carmathan is growing dire Gareth. The Macceln's are better at their job than I gave them credit for. They are using their propaganda machine to paint the Valier's as 'the usurper's pawns' while suppressing any news of their own ties to Ree. I'm concerned. If Ree gets a third vote on the council, we won't have any diplomatic avenues left. It will eventually lead to war," "I have a plan", Gareth said. "What! You have a plan that I don't know about?" "Yep, and Christine just about fell off her chair when I told her about it. She wholeheartedly approves." Gareth then begins walking to the Council Chambers. "Wait!. You're not going to tell me? You at least need to let me vet the plan, figure out any wrinkles you're not thinking of." "Nope, you can be as surprised as everyone else." "Crazy paladin." "What." "Sorry, crazy-assed paladin, Sire."Damaran Council Meeting
Eleint 25th (Year of Rogue Dragons) The Damaran Council again convened on Eleint 25th, Year of Rogue Dragons. While they engaged in many orders of business and trivial matters, always with an undercurrent of distrust and bickering, several important events happened at that meeting. Riordan Parnell gives a brief and bland synopsis of the situation in Carmathan. The Situation in Carmathan
"Esteemed member of the council. At the last Council meeting, you raised Count Giles Rosby to be regent of Carmathan as the Duchy chooses its next Duke. House Macceln has the strong initial support in the capital of Ravensburg. The counties of Ravensburg and Morildon also seem initially supportive of the Maccelns. The Valiers have support in Fairfield and Highland. Interestingly, Rivervale is standing behind Regent Rosby, who doesn't seem to want the job. Egdelin hasn't made up its mind just yet. "While the Valier's are standing on their military background and defense of the duchy from humanoid raiders and during the Bloodstone Wars, the Maccelns are painting them as King Dragonsbane's hand-picked soldiers, a position that would make them unpopular in neutral Carmathan. The Valiers' counter-position that the Maccelns are allied with Morov and Baron Ree doesn't seem to be getting any traction in the duchy. Thus the Maccelns seem to be winning the hearts and minds of the people. "Regent Rosby is doing an admirable job keeping the duchy up and running while also keeping the two competing sides from out and out conflict. Neither side is happy with the regent's restrictions on their competition, but neither side can turn against the regent publicly without losing support. "The Regent Rosby is now served by two gnomish bodyguards, a Ser Buckthorn BeyWinn and his companion Gazlowe, of Rivervale. Gazlowe is a svirfneblin, of all things. Ser BeyWinn has managed to get another of his companions, an Aelhearn Lenor, promotion to the head of the Ducal Guard in charge of the Regent's security. There has been at least one known attempt on Rosby's life, thwarted by the three defenders I just named. "There are four months left before the people of Carmathan make their decision. Winter will tamp down a lot of the activity. The Counts are all aware that they will need to decide for their counties by the end of Ches, and that the Council meeting in Tarsakh will include the installment of the new Duke." As the Council begins wrapping up, King Dragonsbane says, "I'd like to again bring up the situation in Brandiar." Dimian Ree and Sylvia Praka don't even hide their look of disgust. "Baron Donlevy, it seems that in the previous meeting, you claimed that the people of Carmathan had the right to choose their own Duke. Is that correct?" "Yes Sire." "Then if the people of Carmathan are allowed to select their own Duke, why deny that to the people of Brandiar. Five of the six counties of Brandiar have repeatedly sent the Council their support for raising Dormythyrr as the next Duke of Brandiar, yet this council has continued to vote no. I am again requesting that the council approve the selection of Dormanthyrr as Duke of Brandiar." Ostel and Morov immediately vote no. Bloodstone votes yes, then it gets to Polten and Gareth says, "Do you stand by your own words Polten, are the people of a province allowed the opportunity to select their own leader, or does that only apply when convenient? I know your own people would choose you as their Baron in a heartbeat if given the chance. Are the people of Brandiar lesser people? Do they not get that right?" Polten votes to raise Dormythyrr. Since that results in a tie. The King is allowed to make the choice. Dormythyrr will become the Duke of Brandiar. Leaving the chamber, Baron Ree corners Donlevy. "What in the hells did you do that for boy? That gives him another vote, are you nuts?" "Actually, Baron, it makes perfect sense. Right now Polten is the deciding vote on the council. We all know that Carmathan seems to be going your way. If you get three votes, really four if you can get Lazy William out of retirement, I will no longer be the deciding vote. With Brandiar in play, it will be three to two, and I will still be the deciding vote and Polten will continue to direct the course of Damara." "Wait until I become King, boy, you will rue this decision." "My Dear Baron, if you become King, and you dare to threaten Polten, my province would have to seriously consider turning south for protection. How horrible would it look for a brand new king to lose a large portion of his kingdom, which just happens to include the kingdom's trading corridor. Don't threaten me. I have options that are unavailable to you."
