Chronicle of Chan

This tome is falsely attributed to Chan, an Elemental Lord thought to be the queen of air creatures aligned with the forces of good. Chan is referred to as male or female, depending on the author. As an elemental being, Chan likely does not have a gender. It is a scholarly tome which delves into a race of elemental air beings known as the Vaati, who were led by the Wind Dukes of Aaqa.   The Chronicle starts with an overview of the Battle of Pesh, possibly one of the greatest battles since the Dawn War, then delves into the nature of the Vaati and Aaqa. Finally, the known glyphs of the Wind Dukes are examined.

The Battle of Pesh

Many thousands of years ago, long before the rise of human civilization, two ancient powers struggled to determine the fate of the still-forming multiverse. On one side was a primal being called the Queen of Chaos, a tentacled horror from an age before ages. Against her stood the rigid legions of the Wind Dukes of Aaqa, the most cultured of the elemental lords who ruled before the birth of the living races, and who yet controlled an empire that spanned worlds. Centuries of stalemate collapsed when the Queen of Chaos recruited her most potent ally, a ruthless Prince of Demons named Miska the Wolf-Spider.   Miska and his demonic legions laid siege to the Wind Dukes’ territory, routing the elemental armies and snuffing out the culture of Aaqa one world at a time. When all seemed lost, a consortium of seven great Wind Duke warriors withdrew from the conflict and developed a plan to destroy Miska the Wolf-Spider and break the back of the Chaos army. An epic quest ensued, in which these “Wandering Dukes” scoured the Great Wheel for a weapon or secret that would undo their hated foe. Drawing upon the lore of a hundred cultures, they constructed one of the most potent artifacts in history—the fabled Rod of Law.   They returned to the war at a pivotal battle on the volcanic fields of Pesh. There, the greatest of the Wandering Dukes plunged the Rod into Miska the Wolf-Spider. When the absolute law of the Rod mixed with the chaos of Miska’s blood, a great planar rift erupted, shattering the Rod into seven pieces. The Prince of Demons and the Wandering Duke vanished into that rift, while the seven parts of the Rod were scattered across the land.

The Vaati

Noble and proud, the vaati are the rulers of Aaqa, a majestic realm dedicated to absolute law. They are also known as the Wind Dukes, and though they trace their origins to the Upper Planes rather than the Plane of Air, these celestials have made the elemental realm their home. A vaati is a statuesque androgynous humanoid, with muscular ebony skin and brilliantly white eyes. They traditionally wear nothing except for belts and harnesses to carry their equipment.   Vaati are dedicated to absolute law over chaos, and to this end they wage a never-ending war against their eternal foes. This war was been going on since time began, when the Wind Dukes of Aaqa still dwelled in the Upper Planes. Chief among their foes was the Queen of Chaos and her consort, Miska the Wolf-Spider, and to defeat these powerful creatures the vaati destroyed their sacred relic, the Rod of Law. The pieces were scattered and Aaqa was plunged into the Plane of Air as a result of that climactic battle. The Rod of Seven Parts, as it is now known, is a potent artifact of law and order, but its pieces only rarely surface across the multiverse.   In Aaqa, the vaati divide themselves into seven distinct castes. The first and lowest is the worker caste, and the other castes are bolstered or created in times of great need. These other castes include soldiers, teachers, judges, counselors, advisors, and guardians. Each caste provides a set of unique abilities and skills suited to the jobs of that caste. Each Vaati wears a complex symbol or glyph which denotes their name, caste, occupation, and family or clan.

Aaqa

Home of the Wind Dukes, Aaqa is an idyllic realm of law and order in every aspect. It is a realm on the Elemental Plane of Air, hidden from travelers of the Labyrinth Winds by elaborate illusions and elemental magic, so that only the vaati and their allies can locate it. While the vaati are the rulers of Aaqa, they number very few, and they rely heavily on aarokocra to take up most duties. The aarokocra are the eyes and ears of the Wind Dukes across the Plane of Air and the multiverse, and they communicate simple messages back and forth through the use of attuned Aeries of Stewardship.   Aaqa is shielded from the chaotic gales of the Labyrinth Winds by ancient vaati magic, and within its borders a peaceful serenity gathers around the gentle breezes that kiss the skin. Several earth motes are anchored to the realm, each containing idyllic gardens and marble columned buildings of radiant white stone. The earth motes are connected to one another by well-crafted stone bridges carved with the images of vaati legends.   The main earth mote is known as the Vale of Aaqa and houses the majority of vaati, working and going about their orderly lives according to ancient sacred laws. The seven castes of the vaati each have their role to play in the maintenance and defense of Aaqa, and the focal point of each caste is found in the Seven Houses located on the main earth mote. The Great Congressional Hall is the largest building in Aaqa, and its doors are sealed by vaati decree, only to be opened when the realms are threatened by the forces of utter chaos.   Wind Duke Glyphs The last portion of the Chronicle goes into the meaning of the Wind Duke glyphs, using dozens of identified examples to attempt to piece together what the various symbols and parts of each glyph represent and how they are tied together in a meaningful way. It is, by and large, an incomplete work and the author admits to only a partial understanding of the glyphs.   It identifies the seven "Wandering Dukes" who abandoned the war against Chaos to discover the secrets of the Rod of Law as Amophar, Darbos, Ernoniel, Icosiol, Penader, Qadeej, and Uriel.
