Kwatarini

The Kwatarini are the descendants of those weary Thanagarian refugees that arrived on Earth, looking for a home and a place to hide from the Kryptonian Empire. Not content to hide in the far north of what would become Greenland or in the isolated frozen content of Antarctica, these refugees were more rugged and explorer-minded.

This led them to Africa. It led them to Matumaini, also known as "Gorilla City".

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Kwatarini, like most cultures of Matumaini, speak Sahwela the official language. However, they also speak an ancient dialect from Thanagar, called Ootelpa.

Culture and cultural heritage

Stories of their Thanagarian ancestors and the Kryptonian threat are passed down between generations. They would have become myths and legends, however the people that would become the Kwatarini preserved what digitized logs, records and books from libraries on Thanagar that they could. The Kwatarini shared this with the other tribes and cultures of Matumaini. This was both out of a gesture of gratitude and a warning.

The thangarians that arrived at Matumaini were soldiers, scholars and their families. They knew the Kryptonians could eventually find them. It never hurt to be prepared.

Since those early years, the Kwatarini have grown to be one of the larger tribes in the city-state. From their ancestors they retain that sense of exploration and adventure. A philosophy at odds with Matumaini's desire to remain hidden from the destructive nations of the world.

However, many Kwatarini enlist in the border patrol to defend the border against encroachment or with the Cultural Analyst Corp. Through the latter, many Kwatarini have visited many other nations and cultures, reporting back to the government of Matumaini as to the state of the world, and if it might be safe to come out of hiding.
