Laboratory of the Ivory Talons, Chapter 6: Secret of Dr. Killian Report
General Summary
Saturday, September 12, 2009, 2:00 am - Manhattan, NY
Rooftop of Manhattan Mini Storage, East 62nd street, New York City
The team had everything they needed except answers.
They had set down on the roof of the Manhattan Mini Storage on East 62nd near the East River. Putting the fantasticar in idle, they pulled out the evidence and sorted through it to look for any meaning to the Clock King's mad crime spree.
They started with a name... Dr. Zyler Killian... and dove into their research. It wasn't long before they uncovered surprising information.
Dr. Killian - a man with hawk-like 'meta' mutation of wings - had made the news as a winner of the WayneTech Fellowship Award for his research into a centrifuge prototype that was based on the use of high powered ultrasound. Throughout the man's career, he's worked at such well known places as STAR Labs, Bio-Investigations Limited, Wai-Go Industries, and lately Oscorp.
The notes from Grail Industries were complex. part of a lab study about Grail Industries latest pharmaceutical product. According to the report, the medicine being delivered wasn't the strength as advertised. While they couldn't confirm this, it might be what set off the Clock King, but why Dr. Killian?
Then there was the footage from the interior of the force cage device used on Mr. Freeze. The electronics were of a highly advanced design but all notes on the components were in a strange, almost pictograph-like, language. Sahara recognized it right off from his time working with SAFEGUARD and Captain Fel Kur'Talak... it was a dialect of the thanagarians. However, Sahara's experience was with Captain Fel's dialect, this was similar but obvious an off-shoot according to the librarian.
Fortunately, Sahara recognized the type of ink used by the inventor of the force cage device. This ink - called TrueBlend Ink - is a special type made to glow under darklight conditions and was sold in only a few places across New York. One of which was Gibbon Electronics on East 69th street nearby! Thinking to locate Dr. Killian's personal address - or at least where he is working from - the team heads for Gibbon Electronics, which was open 24 hours. However, they were in for a surprise.
There, working the night shift, was one of the team's sometimes ally, the self-proclaimed "outlaw tech" named "Weasel", working behind the counter! Weasel, to his credit, did his best to keep his association with the local heroes a secret but not without some effort due to nerves. Sahara distracted the store owner, Jata Moreau, while Weasel was able to local the shipping orders for the special ink. Statesman photographed the information and the pair returned to the parked fantasticar.
Meanwhile, Taki and Moon Knight went to clean up after the hard fight at the construction site. On their way back to meet the others - while Sahara and Statesman was dealing with Weasel - Taki noticed an out of place device semi-hidden near the roof of Gibbon Electronics. It was a hidden camera watching who would come and go from the store. She told the others. Quickly, they deduced the camera didn't belong to Gibbon Electronics and was transmitting to a seeming empty area in the Hallet Nature Sanctuary in Central Park. Specifically on the shores of "The Pond" in the south side of Central Park. The team regrouped the headed to Central Park.
They set down in a small clearing near the picturesque Park Fishing Shack and Pier on the shore of the Pond. In no time they tracked down the source of the signal: A signal relay near a holographic shield in the park! Using the powder from Apothecary Fu that can disrupt mental illusions and holograms, they uncover a hidden, prefab building set up back under the trees. Along with that is Dr. Killian, three hawkperson troopers and three, twelve foot tall, hawk-trooper robots!
The fight was intense but brief, giving the Knights Vigilant and Mr. Freeze as many lumps as they gave out. In Mr. Freeze' case, he survived thanks to a timely energy blast from Taki to jump start the doctor's cold-nanites. Meanwhile, Dr. Killian tried to make his escape with one hawk trooper and a case with a collection of mysterious glowing vials. However, the team had broken through the robots and was already after the doctor. The doctor was taken out by Statesman, and Moon Knight captured the last hawk trooper and the case with its glowing vials.
Approaching police sirens encouraged the team to leave. They gathered up their gear, what evidence they could recover from the now ruined building and Dr. Killian himself! But having Mr. Freeze - not to mention Dr. Killian - along complicated matters. They couldn't return to their own concealed headquarters underneath the youth center. That would put too many people at risk.
In the end, it was Mr. Freeze who offered a solution. He placed a call to an old associate from Gotham City, one that he hoped would be in the area. Fortunately, she was and reluctantly agreed to help. The team flew across the city to land at the site of Leopardworks Savannah, Ltd botanical research lab. Emerging from the fantasticar, the team met their host...
It was notorious Gotham City eco-terrorist, Dr. Pamela Isley - aka "Poison Ivy"
