Session 19: The Pair of Black Antlers Tavern
General Summary
Our heroes awake in the Nightstone Inn belonging to Morak, and upon thanking him for his hospitality they finish their breakfast and make their way North, utilizing the horses rented for them by the harper monk Leosin. Curious to say goodbye to the women Salina from the night before, Thoril finds that many of the feast attendees were travelers who had already set out North earlier in the morning. Dameila scavenges for some more holly berry while Rowan and Hadden argue about the omens of passing clouds.
The heroes arrive along the South bank of the Mirar River two days later, buying goods from refugees selling stale goods under the shadow of Blackford Crossing’s guard tower. Rumors are heard of a curse South in Neverwinter Woods that plagues the crops and prevents the hunters from finding healthy game. After the horses are returned to the Roaringhorn Stables tended by their owner Franco Roaringhorn, PCP lines up in front of the guards running the cable ferries leading to Blackford Crossing. The rafts led by ropes cross the narrowest part of the river and all goods crossing are taxed by Luskan. Each member except Dameila whom they regarded as an unintelligent beast, was taxed a number of gold for the luxury and magic goods they carried into the trade center, and those who tried to smuggle anything in were caught by an acolyte in the city’s service.
Visit the armorer and blacksmith the party sold some goods and bought studded leather armor. Visit General store of Gallivan Eiriendier, buy potions and spyglass. A beggar asks for coin from Hadden who tosses some copper to appease him. Rowan visits sheriff’s desk and finds two bounty posters. One for 5000 gold for a murderous bandit named Worvil “The Weevil” Forkbeard, and the other a 500 gold bounty for the murders of 3 O’Driscoll farmhands. Upon closer inspection Rowan finds an illustration of the PCP party on the bounty poster, ripping it from the board she fled to reveal the development to the party before being noticed by the sheriff. She finds the party following a mass of people into a tavern adorned with a large set of Black Antlers.
Inside is a lively tavern filled with other daring adventurers, gamblers, and fast talkers. Leosin Erlanther is found in the corner with a red bearded dwarf who is introduced as the representative of the Order of the Gauntlet, Ontharr Frume. The party is thanked for making the journey, but is expected to take in the town and enjoy themselves before business is addressed. So, PCP for the first time since they met, set combat aside and enbibed in the revelry of the tavern. Leosin whispers to them that Ontharr is a lively soul, and his allegiance to helping stop the Cult would depend on his judgement of PCP’s character.
There was an epic showdown of strength, where Thoril barely beats Dameila in arm wrestling, after she beat the raining champ and other contenders. Coin was doubled, and then relieved from Hadden’s pockets as he tried his luck in a dice game of Avandra’s Favor. In a show of bravado and showmanship, Thoril participated in an armed skirmish with other locals. Besting the other five warriors, the paladin gave an exhilarating show of combat and left his opponent face down in cow dung. Inside a tense poker like card game called Gambit of Ord was underway between our halfling Rowan, a dark haired halfling male, an old man, and pair of women. As gold chips changed from hand to hand the male halfling laid on the charm, flirting with Rowan while winning in cards. Rowan lost her chips and sensing she was out of her league, retreated only having lost 25 gold. But later as the party reconvened a scuffle took place around the card table as players found they had been pickpocketed. Sure enough, Rowan reaches in her pocket to find herself a 20 gold stack short of coin. As the old man reached to grab the male halfling who had introduced himself as Finton Burrows, the lights go dark and Hadden sees Finton dash for the door, a sack of coin floating above his head. With his mage hand Hadden reaches out for the coin, and sensing a strange force pulling against his mage hand, a phantasmal legerdemain mage hand flashes briefly before the coin falls into the outstretched hand of Finton as he dashes out the door. Rowan chases after him, dashing through an alley she halves the distance, but barely dodges a rope snare hidden in the shadows. She turns the corner to find an empty street, running her hands along the building walls, her hand passes through revealing an illusion. Sticking her head through she sees Finton standing at the end of a dark alley, smiling and looking back at her. Before she enters the alley she sees metal pieces glinting in the shadows of the alleyway and thinks better of following any further. With a crooked smile Finton coos to Rowan, “Now there’s a smart lass”, before disappearing into the night with his ill-gotten gains.
Returning to the Pair of Black Antler’s tavern that serves as base for the Order of the Gauntlet, they find a back room open and pitchers of wine and ale waiting along with Ontharr Frume. PCP sits and begin discussing the issues with him. “Something rotten is afoot. We have no formal organization to oppose these rascals and we need people like you, who know how and when to fight, and how and when to keep their heads down and observe. We can’t promise you anything except long days filled with danger and stress— but what could be better than that, eh?”
Across town in another tavern, this one run down and near empty, two cutthroats enter and question the beggar in the corner. “Any news on the sorcerer?” The beggar pulls down his hood revealing a patched bandana, counting the copper he buys another ale, “No news yet, but it sounds like he’s close” sneers patches.
