Session 21: Revenge of the Riverborn
General Summary
In the foggy moonlight Hadden is roused awake at the end of a pier. Two rugged men push him into a dockhouse where the glow of a cigar lights the face of Hadden’s old quartermaster Basil Fatbeard Rathbone. Hadden’s former Captain Sharlasta Stormsword has sent him to retrieve Hadden for sentencing. Fatbear demands to know what Hadden has done with "Cortez's Gold Medallion", saying it disappeared the same day as Hadden doomed them to the empire's dungeons. Adding that he will never forgive Hadden for cursing their journey to the "Isle De Muerte" that day. He lets Hadden know that there might be an “accident” and kill Hadden out of spite. There is a keelboat arriving that day, which would take Hadden away. Hadden is bound within a shed for the remainder of the morning where he is beat by a guard, but frees himself from his binds.
PCP waits for Hadden’s arrival to breakfast but after an hour they depart to find what happened to him. It is confirmed from the tavern staff that Hadden left in the late night crossing the street into town. Following Dameila to some tracks they find a tavern ale mug next to a sign of distress. Following a wheel track South to the river, PCP finds a discarded wheel barrel and Hadden’s pipe next to a ruptured raft. The raft guards were uncooperative but did say that no ship had gone upriver that morning. So off PCP set down river in search of a raft and their ally.
Through a crack in the shed Hadden see’s the patched bandanna beggar from earlier. The begger introduces himself as Pete, then assures Hadden that there is still a way out, and to be ready to run on his signal. If asked why, he says the Riverborn code “Take what you can, give nothing back”, a tattoo of a black snake flashing along his arm. Upon reaching a pair of fisherman miles down the road PCP see marks in thieves cant on a hut and approach. They learn that some miscreants have been squatting in their absent neighbor’s property further up the hill past a split tree. Following the lead, they spot pairs of rugged armed men guarding the road. Preferring stealth PCP runs into the woods and makes it to the base of the neighbor’s property. After sneaking past the last of the guards they find a chicken coop, house, and latrine where someone had been laying in the dirt. Just then they spot Hadden being loaded onto a keelboat by pirates and rush to his aid.
With a loud explosion the dock erupts from a detonated powder keg placed by Patched Pete. The distraction knocks part of the crew into the river and gives the party their chance to save Hadden. Hadden bursts from his ropes brandishing firing magic missiles from his wand and proclaiming to his old crewmate that this would be the day he almost caught capta-, before falling over the aft into the river in a gust of wind. The crew leaps onto the river’s floating trees and turtles attacking PCP for interfering.
Dispatching the bandits along the shore PCP moved onto the dock, covering fire for Hadden and holding the bandit’s at bay. Hadden makes it to shore severely wounded, but he managed to destroy the anchor chain stopping Fatbeard from turning around and pursuing. A wagon sporting a haggard old man with a patched bandana roars to their aid as arrows rained down after them. GET IN, shouts Patches Pete and he expediently brings the party into town and out of the pirate’s reach. Hadden then recognizes the man as his oldest friend and former Riverborn Gang brother Pete, and thanks him for his aid. Pete insists that it is the Riverborn Way, before asking for one more thing. He owes quite a bit of money to some bad people, but there is one last easy heist he has planned that should take care of all of it. That is, if he has the help from some capable hands.
