Session 23: The Sure Thing

General Summary

At the Blackford Crossing safehouse PCP exchanges some conversation and magic items then they rest for the night. The next morning, they wake up early to set their heist in motion. They investigate the road seeing it mostly deserted in the early morning and decide to take the alleys instead. Thoril not knowing the way gets PCP lost on the way to the shop, but by dawn Dameila leads them to the storefront.
PCP scouts out the front of the shop, only finding a vagrant in the alley that they paid off. A patrol of guards march down the street forcing the group to hide in some trash and behind the stairwell stoop. Thoril uses detect magic noticing several items in the store’s second and first floors. Rowan and Hadden break in to the back alley door and hear muffled conversation from the front shop floor. Carefully they walk across the temporary wooden planks laid over the hole in the stairway. Rowan picks open the stairway door while Hadden peers into the dark stair hole and sees a chest obscured in the first floor foundation. Knowing that time was of the essence they quietly moved to the second door floor secured door and began picking the lock. Dameila notices the customer leave the front of Gallivan’s store holding an ornate bag and chases after. Pete warns her that if she isn’t back soon they will leave her as not to risk the heist’s success.
Dameila notices the maroon robed customer has an ornate drawstring bag from the shop and is loading on to the River Mirar rope rafts. She waits in line a few feet from the robed man and notices him wearing a ring with an eye on it. The man is the last rider on the raft and begins to cross the river while Dameila waits for the next raft. Not wanting to lose her pray she dashes past the guards and dives for the leaving raft.
The reinforced door stalls Rowan temporarily until Hadden produces a torch to give her a better view. Stealthily as not to alert the guard and storeowner below, she picks the last tumbler and the door swings open. Inside is an ornately decorated bedroom filled with interesting items. A bear rug covers the entirety of the middle of the room, contrasted by a large personal portrait of Gallivan against the south wall. On the left a polished suit of armor stands tall on a plaque holding a halberd, flanked by a weapon rack of masterfully crafted swords and spears. A luxury four post bed sits in the corner across from a table strewn with letters and documents. Against the back wall stands three, six foot tall pulpits of wood, each topped with an ornate glass case. The three items encased are were an ornate bottle, a pile of swirling black beads, and a topaz laden golden circlet (sunburst circlet). Rowan moves to the table where she finds piles of store financial records and a wax letter stamp of an eye with a triangle around it. Lying next to it is a sealed document of fine paper sealed by the same wax seal that ordained the mysterious letter signed R.T. She scoops the letter into the folds of her cloak of warmth and moves towards the middle stand holding the circlet. Hadden guarding from the doorway notices too late as he reaches out to stop Rowan, but her foot clicks a pressure pad underneath the rug and several boards fall loose from the ceiling right towards her.
Dameila claws her way onto the raft snarling at the horrified passengers, looking for the man she was chasing. Alarm bells ring on both sides of the river as guards begin forming to address the wild half dragon causing a commotion. Pushing past the others she finds her mark, an oily black-haired man with a goatee and pencil thin mustache. He cries out in terror, asking what she wants. In a poor attempt at diplomacy Dameila insists she just wants to be friends. He retorts back in disgust that she has an odd way of showing it, saying she has ruined the mornings entire “operation”. Asking for the ornate bag she rips it from his grasp to see a rod of colored yarns, green, blue, and red. He insists that it is just a gift but he will tell her more if she helps him escape the guards that form along the southern bank. Four guards draw their weapons and move towards the raft as Dameila lets out a roar running to open a passage for her new friend. Horrified at the strength of the half-dragon one guard runs to the rafts for reinforcements while another crumples under her morningstar. This results in enough room for the robed man to dash to the Southern treeline, turning to Dameila yelling for her to follow. Taking a crossbow bolt to the side she fends off two more blades before turning and dashing after the man. After enough space was put between them and the guard, Dameila stops the man and demands more answers regarding his ring, bag, and connection to Gallivan.
Hadden uses his mage hand to catch one of the falling boards, Rowan was struck minorly by another, but the noise caused combat with an animated armor. Thoril hears commotion and throws rope through the open second floor window. Rowan leaps on the pulpit, noticed an arcane glyph in the lock, but picks the lock anyway, setting off an alarm downstairs. Hadden is struck by the armor, ties off the rope and jumps out the window to escape. Rowan runs for the window dodging the armor’s opportunity attack with a cunning disengage. She throws herself from the window, clasping the sunburst circlet. Swinging down the rope she lands and stores the circlet in her backpack, seeing Thoril and Hadden crossing to the opposite alleyway wear Pete and Dameila had been waiting.
Dameila fails to persuade the man that she is not hostile, and is blinded by pocket glass and sand, as the man flees he shouts “You Masquerade bastards will never be able to stop us Knights”. Roaring with rage Dameila swipes out at the man before running in the direction of the river to restore her sight. Submerging her head in the river she still hears the alarms of the keep as the man has disappeared from her sight deeper into the wood. Frustrated and alone Dameila looks around with curiosity on how she would rejoin her party and the heist.
Thoril and Hadden make their way through the now crowded street without attracting any attention only to find the alleyway devoid of either Dameila or Patches Pete. Distraught but still focused on the mission they turned to see Rowan land below the window and begin dashing into the street with the shouts of Gallivan and his guard Grob behind her. As the morning church mass was beginning, the church followers filled the street, all dressed in matching white robes. As the halfling swerved and ducked her way through legs she is caught off guard as a robed figure slams into her side, knocking the circlet from her bag and is clinks into the middle of the street. She scrambles to recover it but more followers block her route as she is jostled back. Thoril loses sight of Rowan, but Hadden sees the circlet lying unprotected in the middle of the street. Rowan runs through the crowd diving for circlet, only to be struck to the ground mere feet away by the cart of a traveling merchant. Bewildered by the series of events he watches as the ornate drawstring bag holding the circlet lifts from the ground and floats down the street away from PCP. The whole party notices this and all begin running through the crowded street to recover their prize. As they follow they notice two groups of robed figures separate to the left and right of the street, the circlet following them. Before losing the circlet, Hadden catches up and leaps onto the bag, shoving it deep in his robe. The right group of robed men stops, and turning to face Hadden, Enzo and his two thugs attack the gnome.
Dameila follows the river upstream to the East looking for a safe way into the city where she notices a fisherman in a boat in the distance. Possibly noticing a familiar face she heads towards him. Back in the middle of Blackford Crossing’s Town Avenue the rest of PCP do battle for their freedom and riches against the bounty hunter party of Enzo and crew. Enzo and thugs chunk away at the surrounded Hadden, bloodying the gnome who responds with a shatter, blasting his thugs back. Rowan casts hunters mark then shoots Enzo, upon seeing the danger and opportunity runs into the middle of the group and uses the one bag of Disappearing Dust she obtained from Dameila the night before. In a puff of dust PCP vanishes from sight and begins to run from the fight as Thoril notices a patrol of guards running their way. Bewildered at their invisibility the Thugs swing out wildly and strike Thoril twice, the clang of his armor giving away his position. Not wanting to lose both the possible prizes, Enzo clutches a magic amulet around his neck and upon activating, the nearby Thoril and Rowan reappear in the street, their invisibility dispelled. Hadden dashes into a nearby alley with the circlet only briefly looking over his back to see if the party followed. Rowan wanting to save Thoril, but not be captured herself, attempted to cover his escape before fleeing into the same nearby alleyway. “Well if we can’t have the circlet, we will take your life paladin to persuade your group to return” sneers Enzo. With a flurry of blows the thugs attempt to take the remaining life of the bloodied paladin, but his training would not allow this. With a flash of steel and might Thoril parries the thugs, spinning and killing Enzo by plunging shatterspike through his chest. The pounding of armored sentry footsteps approached in the distance as the paladin pushed through the whimpering bossless thugs leaving Enzo’s corpse in the middle of the street. Running through the alleyways PCP is stopped by Patches Pete in a new cart where they bolt South to the River Mirar where they find Dameila. Rowan pays the fisherman 10 gold when he reconnects the party and they promise to buy much more fish anytime they are in Blackford Crossing. Patches Pete leads them to the basement of the Broken Bucket tavern.
The Smallcoin money lender Skeemo Clammersham works from a small enclosure marked by the Thieves Cant for fence. A guard notices Pete as a regular where they are led inside they meet a smartly dressed gnome in Cassalanter family colors of green and yellow. A goose with tricross badge adorns the gnome’s robes. He flicks a heavy eyball emblazed gold coin through his fingers, in front sits a black stone tray filled with sand and a dagger. Pete draws a triangle with the dagger and says “Clams”. He motions to Rowan who hands the circlet to him where they then sell it for 1500 gold (300 each) by saying “Redeem”. Hadden then opens an account with the Cassalanter money lenders selling his loot and depositing 400 gold for later use by saying “Proffer”. Patches Pete says goodbye to PCP outside as he leaves for Luskan now that his debts are repaid. He speaks with Hadden about how he will finally be a real captain with your own ship, but that will need a crew. He knows of some out of work pirates that would make fine men for the crew and he would go investigate these leads. Hadden promised him the quartermaster position as first mate was for Rowan. Saying they could be reached in Blasingdell, PCP made their way to the safehouse for one last rest in the city of Blackford Crossing.
