Session 28: An Ankheg Attacks
General Summary
PCP forego the invitation to meet the Emerald Enclave's faction leader at the festival, even after hearing that someone from Dameila's past would be there. And after resting and equipping their new magic items they headed back onto the road to Blasingdell. Traveling for two more days the hills crew high around them and the air grew cold. Dameila suggested they find cover for the night, so the party left the road and headed into the hills to rest. During the process Rowan caught sight of a traveling carriage with a halfling family headed up the road. Hiding in a bush she watched as it passed and returned to the camp.
As they took turns taking watch the party noticed a shift in the surrounding environment. There was a flash of light from over the hill and the cries of a horse. Late in the night the party was shaken awake and they went to investigate the commotion. Half a mile North they found a tarnished camp with a terrified halfling family inside. There were large upturned mounds of dirt around the carriage and camp and one of the horses from earlier was missing. The remaining horse was tasseled to a tree causing a commotion. As PCP calmed the horse there was a rattle in the ground and a Ankheg burst from the ground attacking the family and PCP.
In a vicious battle PCP defeated the monster and saved the family. Thoril healed the horrible burns on the halflings from the monster's acid spit and they camped together before traveling in the morning. The father introduced himself as Treebly Leafbottom and said he was traveling to Blasingdell to make his wealth in the gem market. Early the next morning they viewed the high walls of their destination and headed to the Southern Gate. Cobblestone streets, miners, smell of iron ore, smokestacks covering the air in soot. Injured villagers from ambush. On the surface, Blasingdell was populated with squat stone buildings and a few stone towers. It was arranged in such a way as to provide great efficiency. Its walls were extremely thick and sloping, so as to allow water to be poured down them in the winter, which froze to make them slippery. The area around the city was dotted with open mines and heaps of rock. Roads led to its major mines in the Spine of the World mountains, which yielded a wide range of metals and gemstones, so they were guarded against orc and monster raids by the militia. The stone and metals taken out of the mines were worked by craftsmen. After being expertly cut and hewn, the stone was transported on floating barges down river.
As the party made their way towards the merchant ward to sell their wares they stopped to listen to details of the recent orc attack. A small boy holding a bag from the Blasingdell Express Post runs up and taps on the paladin's side, "Um excuse me, are you Sir Brinsbane?", he then hands over a letter to Thoril. He turns opening the letter and begins to read a letter from his brother Thipheus, "Dearest Brother,"
