There are two economic systems in Talitha Harbor. The main system is the credit system, which is a digital currency system. The second is a trade and barter system. It is used by Talithans with a
Identity Chips and the
Chipless.
Credit System:
When a Talithan goes through their
Choosing Ceremony they are assigned an Identity Chip. Once they start working in their
vocation as a Tier-I, they will start earning credits. Everyone is paid based on their Tier. Tier-I farmers make the same as Tier-I Health Services members. Higher pay is recieved at the higher Tiers. Talithans who decide to become artisans and work outside of the vocation system will make whatever they charge for their services.
All Talithans are given a monthly stipen of basic goods that are free. The credits are used for, "luxuries," above and beyond those basic goods. Anything provided by the Health Services Vocation is free for everyone as well.
The credit databases are replicate between the three Great Cities using an advanced encryption system. It is rare for anyone to try and steal money through manipulating the digital data. The most common form of theft is stealing the identity pads of careless Talithans. The shops ran by the vocations use a sensor system at the door for quick and easy shopping. Talithans can choose to turn this feature off and pay directly, opening their identity pad with a passphrase and even requiring facial recognition by the shop owner. However, not everyone uses that level of security. It is completely up to the individual. With all basic needs met automatically some are not that worried about credit theft.
Credits are also used to live in Tier'd housing or one of the City Fortresses. There is free of charge housing. The Tier'd housing is slightly larger and situated in the center of the city near the vocation buildings and halls. The price is based on the income. The prices are low enough that a couple of Tier-Is could pool their resources and easily afford a Tier-II house. The Fortress homes are a little more. Part of that is to reserve them for the
Councillors who work heavily in that building. These rooms are no larger than the Tier-III houses, it's simply about location.
Artisans can also live in Tier'd housing provided they make enough income. Most artisans can afford Tier-I housing. Artisan goods are the most common consumer item that credits used for. Though they are also used for entertainment venues, prepared food, additional goods outside of their allowance, and travel/vacation.
All credits spent go back into the system to be redistributed as income. There is a finite amount of credits that any one Talithan can own. This is to limit greed and abuse for monetary gain. If a person hits their limit then they will receive no more income until they spend it.
There is no form of tax on Talitha. There is not one large government entity that is in charge of all of the infrastructure or social systems. Instead each system is taken care of individually by the vocations. They trade their time and work efforts for a functioning social system, not extra income or a tax.
Trade and Barter System
The trade and barter system is not controlled like the credit system. It is up to the people involved to work out everything to everyone's satisfaction. If there is a dispute then they can report it to the
Protection Vocation and seek resolution there. There is no universal physical currency, though some have chosen to create their own currency. This is popular among the Pleasure Houses. Though they will accept credits, one can also use the specific coin made by the House as well. The House will pay these out for services or sometimes as prizes during events. The Pleasure Artists working there can also choose to be paid with these instead of credits, and their clients can buy them if that is the preference.
One can trade almost anything under the barter system. However one can not trade raw materials or life, ie fauna, insects, etc. It happens, of course. Any suspected illegal trade of this nature is investigated by the
Vocation of Preservation. With the careful monitoring of the environment any large scale trade of this nature is usually detected fairly quickly. Some will attempt travel to the uninhabited areas for this purpose, which can be a dangerous endevaor depending on which season of the Sol Cycle they are in.
