Dispater (DIS-pa-terr)

Warden of Dis, Lord of Despair

Dispater, the Lord of Despair, is the prince of the second layer of The Nine Hells. His realm, the Slumbering Mirror, is a frozen industrial prison over which he presides as Warden in his Iron Tower. The Slumbering Mirror is known as the second-coldest location in all of the planes, the first being the Elemental Plane of Ice in the The Elemental Nexus  Dispater appears as a one-legged goat man with a silver-headed cane. His body is otherwise humanoid, although he balances perfectly on one hoof at all times, and no moves as if levitating. It seems that he in fact did not lose his other leg, but his entire body is structured to only have one. He has the head of a black-furred goat with straight curved horns and prefers to wear a grey, well-tailored suit with a silver pocketwatch. He often wears black leather gloves.   Those who meet Dispater often have hazy recollections of their interaction, although most remember him as a bland, polite person who will just as easily dismiss a soul as condemn it. His realm is Despair, the passive sin, and the punishment for relishing in it is to sink in as deep as the Slumbering Mirror will allow-- which is quite deep. As such, he stays out of much of the dramatics of the other princes of the Hells, and quietly accrues power on his own without alliance. Like many princes of the Hells, he is likely extremely paranoid.   The Warden is sometimes also called the Lord of Forgiveness, which may seem strange, but the Slumbering Mirror is the layer of the Hells with the highest rate of souls flowing through it to the Shadowfell. Dispater, who has one fairly well-off cult in Talonn, is regarded as a devil who actually is concerned with doing his job of bringing corrupt souls back to repentance. This cult believes that at the bottom of the Slumbering Mirror is the light of forgiveness, and that one must drown in despair before receiving Lord Dispater's blessing to heal.
