Olidammara (olly-dum-MAR-uh)

Summary

Olidammara, the goddess of revelry, is considered a minor deity by many. However, this classification is misleading; the celestial Olidammara is just as old as Tempus, Melorae, and Umberle, who are part of the "major" pantheon. This misconception can be attributed to the unusual nature of Olidammara's aspect-- she is the only celestial to still roam the The Material Plane, albeit as a mortal.   When The Godbreaker banished the celestials from the Material Plane, only Olidammara was allowed to remain, and only then because of her decision to use her power to create an endlessly reincarnating mortal soul for herself. It is said that the Goddess of Revels agreed to leave Talonn, but looked back over her shoulder at the horizon and found herself transfixed, saying to the Godbreaker: "I cannot leave my people without disappearing myself! So, if I cannot walk above them, I will walk among them!" Thus, the bulk of Olidammara's powers were sealed into the The Feywild, and Melorae rooted her soul into the earth itself so that it would not escape to the The Shadowfell.   Reincarnation in Talonn is extremely rare, given the nature of The Raven Queen's system. Olidammara's Avatar of Revels is both the goddess herself and her mortal vessel, making her the only goddess without aspects and the only one who remains among her people. The importance of Olidammara is overlooked, but as a close relation of Sune, she is one of the driving forces in Talonn; without relaxation, music, drink, and dance mortals have no outlet for their free emotions. Any and all festivals owe fealty to her, bards and performers pay her tribute, and every tavern in the land hopes to someday be graced by the presence of the Avatar-- whether or not they would ever know is another matter. There are frequent claims of Avatarhood, and quite a few have surely been true, but many others false.   The Avatars of Olidammara have a few telltale traits, although most folk are not aware of them and there are many people with them that are not the celestial herself. The most notable is that every Avatar has one green eye (left) and one brown (right). The others are all far less tangible; the Avatar is a skilled musician and dancer, has supernatural charisma (of any kind), and suffers from terrible wanderlust. Every incarnation has their own name and personality, but all are exceptional in some way, even if you have to squint.   The last tangible indicator is the The Lute of Olidammara, which has been passed from Avatar to Avatar across thousands of years. The current Avatar is unknown, and the Lute is in the possession of Bill Stoneheaver, who was entrusted it by Carybdis Beniño before she died.

Spread

The followers of Olidammara are known as the motliest clergy in Talonn. As clerics and paladins of revelry, they are frequently asked to officiate weddings and other celebrations, but are treated with suspicion as many also have the tendency to be a little too charming.   The goddess has very few dedicated places of worship. Shrines to Olidammara are common, but temples are extraordinarily rare as many of her clerics are afflicted by the same wanderlust as their deity. In the age of Crystal, several temples cropped up, but most have been abandoned.

Variations & Mutation

It is said that Olidammara has or had a dark aspect called the Maenad.

In Literature

It is extremely common for books to be dedicated to Olidammara, as are many songs and dances. A common opener for epic poems is "As Olidammara tells--!".

In Art

Olidammara is almost never depicted, as it is impossible to represent every incarnation at once and her original appearance is lost to time. The most famous representation of her is a stone relief carving from the Crystal age that shows her as having many heads and arms, each different, to show her plurality.
