Episode 2 Ogre Steps
General Summary
Picking up on the 21st of June, our party find themselves waking up in the barracks of the Ember Boar Guild.
As the four new recruits gather themselves and prepare for their first official day as adventurers, they wander about the modest guild hall and discuss the two potential contracts prepared for them. Quickly settling on the higher paying option, they take some time to question Ayla Beach-Tree about the potential job.
With partial information, Ayla Beach-Tree describes that the contract requires the party to go and retrieve merchandise that had been stolen during transport. Supposedly being attacked by one or more ogres, the five souls guarding the supplies had been overwhelmed, only leaving one partially alive after the attack.
Kovel Coinchin is the sole survivor that made it to Mesadorei, and is currently being treated at the Remembrance Point Hall.
Having assumed they had gained all the information they could from Ayla Beach-Tree, our heroes set off to find Kovel in hopes that he'll know more, travelling across the city of Mesadorei in the early hours of the morning.
Showing the proper appreciation to enter the communal shelter, our party discover Kovel in the infirmary and begin poking him for more details, discovering that he still believes his business partner, Bomma Ravenbeard, to be alive. Offering somewhat foggy details of the actual attack before Tomas Netweaver magically delves into his mind to try and pierce the veil of memory.
Picking up the details regarding Kovel's rescue by a random rancher named Rolland, the party ultimately decide they had secured enough information and set off in the direction of the Carquin Family estate in hopes of securing a cart. Luckily as the day creeps towards noon, they are lent a horse and cart by the event manager of the estate, allowing them to finally begin their journey out of the city.
Reaching the gate on their way onto the plains, our heroes are intercepted by Camus Sea-Tree who wishes them luck and warns them about breaking "rule three". Leaving them to begin their adventure after giving Tomas Netweaver a device to signal him during their travels.
Breaking free from the sprawl of the city on their first half-day of travel, our heroes fully enter the expansive lands of the glade and settle in for a nights rest.
Waking up June 22nd, the party quickly stumble upon Rolland, the rancher they had been told saved Kovel after the attack on his wagon.
In a brief conversation with the older man, our heroes learn that one of his herd had been taken in the previous night. Assuming and suspecting that the thief was most likely one of the ogres they were wary of, they come to an agreement to pay the rancher for his assistance in guiding them to the site.
Spending the morning being led to the location of the missing cattle, Rolland takes his compensation and says his goodbyes, leaving the party to investigate. Quickly discovering the rather obvious trail moving away from the area of disturbance, our party start to track the unknown attacker west, towards the nearby mountains.
Striking out into the unclaimed wilderness and picking up a fresh trail of blood after about an hour, the group spy the distant shape of a large creature lumbering over the horizon. Again assuming this must be their potential target, they keep their eyes locked and continue to travel forward in hopes of closing the distance.
By nightfall, they had managed to crawl only moderately closer, but identify that their prey had stopped to rest. Taking the opportunity, our heroes skulk off into the darkness and sneak their way over to the slumbering ogre's camp.
Settling on the plan of jumping it during the night, the party ambush the sleeping beast and quickly dispatch him through a variety of violent means. Eventually sheering off its nose, ear, and slicing its throat, the once mighty beast is left as a massive corpse in the tranquil grassland.
After finally getting some rest late into the night, the party resume their search for the ogre's lair on the 23rd. Spending the majority of the day scrambling the cart and horse over rough, mountainous terrain, they finally spy some sort of cave tucked into the landscape.
Sending Quinlan Carrick ahead, the light begins to fade as night sets in. Making it to the entrance of the underground network, the half-elf hears the horrendous noise of some large creature in distress, attempting to decipher its source before a clumsy Tomas Netweaver hints at their unwelcome arrival.
