Episode 7 The Dead and the Dying
General Summary
Setting off on July 1st, The Ember Four leave Mesadorei in pursuit of their most recent contract. Having accepted the task of cleansing Yevalune of a recent kobold problem, they follow the main road heading north to begin covering the multiple day journey.
Along the way they stumble upon a lone man putting his partner to rest atop an isolated hill. Appearing somewhat shaken and hesitant as the party approach, the man who introduces himself as Thalan, eventually accepts the party's assistance and tries his best to respect the fallen elf's beliefs.
Once his partner is put to rest, the nomadic elf gifts Quinlan Carrick with a tool known as a "Wind Whistle". Appearing as a small segment of some bamboo-like reed, this instrument can be blown to summon a strong gust of wind in a expansive and open area. Mostly used by the nomadic people to cover their scent as they move about the glade.
Setting back on the road, our party make steady progress northward until their relatively pleasant travel is interrupted by a band of goblinoid creatures. First being spotted by Quinlan Carrick as an injured cow flees the monstrous hunting party, our heroes are awoken and ushered to hide from the passing threat. Almost managing to stay obscured, the presence of the party is picked up by a lone orc bringing up the rear. Beginning to investigate his suspicion, his nerves are calmed by the sudden appearance of Mr. Sparkles, lowering his guard as he steps further into the party's clutches.
Broken off from his group, The Ember Four set upon the creature with speed, quickly ending his life before he can alert the others. Making sure his corpse wouldn't be found easily, the party quickly search his person before abandoning the scene and creating more distance north.
Eventually arriving at Yevalune on the night of the 4th, our heroes enter into a town that appears rather quiet and reserved. Taking a quick glance over the small cluster of buildings that made up the center of the farming settlement, the party's attention eventually shifts to the Fresh Spring Tap, the local inn/tavern.
After a quick conversation with the owner, the party is directed back across the center of town to seek out Elwar Vago, the land holder of the town itself.
Approaching his residence, our heroes get their first introduction to the situation at hand. Learning that most of the residents have been pulled from the distant homesteads, and casualties from the kobold raids are rather low. Most of the damages coming in the form of slaughtered cattle and burned homes which the townsfolk seem somewhat agitated about.
The only exception is Lensa Envaris, a recent widow who refuses to leave the farm farthest west of Yevalune. Her life is owed to the singular "guard" the town had, who recently gave his life to save hers a few days prior.
Being informed that the daughter of the deceased guard is Ava Mornal, Elwar Vago warns that both the young girl and the grieving widow are in precarious positions, but could potentially serve as the best sources of information for the party.
Taking all that Elwar Vago had to offer before they depart, our heroes decide to take their rest at the tavern as watches are set up throughout the night.
During Tomas Netweaver's watch, he is introduced to the young girl in the green cloak he had been told about earlier. Striking up a small conversation before Tomas Netweaver decides it's best to go and wake up Brenun Drurunath.
After raising the grumpy dwarf, the two return back to Ava Mornal and begin to press her for more information on the kobolds and the supposed dragon that accompanies them. During this investigation Tomas Netweaver taps into the young girls mind and gets the first glimpse of the large creature that had been veiled in mystery so far, though his prodding strikes a raw emotion for the young girl which causes her to snap at Tomas Netweaver and leave the scene.
Holding onto the information they had gained, Tomas Netweaver and Brenun Drurunath wait until morning to bring the rest of the party up to speed, just finishing they explanation before Ava Mornal returns to the tavern and discards a fresh kobold corpse down onto the floor.
