Mechanized Robots

Mechanized robots or "mechas" are a new form of military technology. They are bipedal robots that are controlled by a human driver and powered by a compound steam engine with one boiler attached like a backpack. Most countries don't have more than a handful of them, and competition to become a driver is fierce. A standard mecha is equipped with a gun for the left hand and a triple-rotating cannon for the right arm. They are somewhat human in appearance with headlights for eyes and a large metal plate over the engine that looks like a nose. In warfare, mechas are extremely powerful and can easily break holes in rows of line infantry. Bullets bounce harmlessly off of the mechas. Because of this, land warfare has adapted to more mobile tactics. However, mechas have a major design flaw. They can easily build up too much pressure during the heat of battle, and unless the pressure is released, they are prone to exploding and killing both driver and anyone nearby. In response, some countries have developed mechas that can hold two drivers with one person specifically tasked as the engineer to keep the machine operational. The driver also enters the mecha through the nose, and a ladder leads up to the cockpit. From there, windows allow them to see out. A series of levers and dials control the mecha, and a trigger similar to what's standard on a firearm allows either the gun or cannon to fire. They are primarily used in Astoria, Petrek, and Samoir and first created by a Petrekian inventor. During the years of peace, models were sold to other nations, and they began developing their own designs based on the original model. The typical variations are in the placement of parts and armament. In Astoria, it's not uncommon for mechas to have a functioning right hand that can draw a sword or pistol-cannon.
